So apparently, throwing leaves at cars is a felony. So how this works where I am at is there are 4 levels of fellony, D class, C class, B class and A class. Some teens around 15-18ish where throwing leaves at some cars, but not intentionally, they were just throwing them and the wind kind of flew them around, but a couple people decided to be A$$holes. So two of them got charged with D class felonies. 1 got charge with a B class felony because he threw it at a metro bus which is serious because it is government related. 1 got a A class felony because he threatened the bus driver after a dispute defending his stance about not intentionally throwing anything at the bus, .......................... So my question is why the hell is such a small thing considered a felony? Are we all that insanely panicky that we think we need laws that can be broken so easily by accident? Like leaves at a car? Come on guys, let those kids go. At the moment, they are still looking into it, I am not sure whether they will just let them leave or not but this is dumb. Is this a common law in all states?

Probably more likely kids throwing piles of leaves at cars windshields as they pass.  (very dangerous)

No one is going to get cited for 1 leaf... and you can't even throw 1 leaf anywhere.

Throwing anything at a passing car can be dangerous. They can think you are throwing something that could damage their car and swerve and hit someone else or obstruct their visibility and do the same thing. It does seem overkill to be charged with a felony, but they must not have been too bright to be doing it long enough to get in trouble in first place.

When the prison industrial complex needs more laborers working for $0.41 an hour, anything can be declared a felony.

What class of felony is it to fart in church, I wonder?

it's a felony because throwing leaves into the road can interfere with the driving of people controlling multi-ton vehicles travelling at high speeds that can injure and kill the driver, passengers, occupants of other vehicles, pedestrians, and cause untold damage to property don't act like the kids are victims, maybe naive or they were malicious but they were definitely stupid, if anything they're lucky because that's probably something that can be wiped off their record when they become adults

except in large controlled amounts can hit the windshield, blind or startle the driver possibly causing them to loose control which can result in everything I mentioned above, would affect someone on a motorcycle more and they have every right to use the road

Wow, brilliant idea. Throwing something at a moving car where the driver may have panicked and killed someone with their vehicle.

What drove you to become a cop?lo_Pine

At the time it was the natural way to go WRT to my career progression(I was a cop in the Air Force). And I got lucky with the hiring, a lot of people retired and they hired something like 130 of us county wide.

Pay is p. good, too. Over-time is sweet, but I get taxed like a dog.

I also like helping people who are legitimately in trouble. Or just simply need my help. Community policing is a balancing act between being moderately tough on mickey mouse crimes and giving back to the people who are paying for our services. So I enjoy volunteering in my department's name.

Plus I get a sweet badge, a gun, and I can carry my weapon concealed. So I'm ALWAYS a cop. That's a pretty worthwhile way to live life, if you ask me.

The topic title is a bit misleading. People don't get charged with "throwing leaves at cars in the first degree", and there's no specific crime of leaf-throwing. Instead, there's bound to be a variety of different laws covering throwing things at drivers, causing a public nuisance, reckless endangerment of life, and so on...and the act of leaf-blowing is just a particularly harmless-sounding (but potentially quite serious) example of activities that could break those laws. As for the question of intention - who cares? A reckless act usually amounts to the same thing in the criminal law; you're still responsible for the outcome.

My mom told me about this story a few days ago. Apparently the teens only got six months in prison. I think 50 years is a better punishment for such stupidity.
