Once again, because you've all been very naughty, I've wrked enough effort to do another of these posts...yay!  The following is courtesy of Box Office Mojo.com:

1 Despicable Me 2 $82,518,000    $142,076,000

2 The Lone Ranger $29,432,000    $48,936,000

3 The Heat $25,000,000    $86,398,000

4 Monsters University $19,590,000    $216,127,000

5 World War Z $18,200,000    $158,758,000

6 White House Down $13,500,000    $50,478,000

7 Man of Steel $11,415,000    $271,206,000

8 Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain $10,100,000    $17,460,000

9 This is the End $5,800,000    $85,554,000

10 Now You See Me $2,770,000    $110,415,000

Despicable Me 2 steamrolled over the competition this weekend, pulling in an estimated $142 mil since it opened this past Wednesday.  Add that to the $151 mil it made overseas, and you have a bunch of Universal ececutives ordering extra hookers for themselves to the tune of $293 million.  Nice.

But the big story this weekend is the huge bomb that blew up in the faces of Disney execs.  Still smarting from their last big budget failure John Carter, The Lone Ranger opened to horrible reviews and a miserable 5-day total of only $48 mil--definitely a far cry from the film's estimated $250 million budget.  This also marks the third big-budget bomb that came out this summer, following the dismal performances of After Earth and White House Down.

Next Week's major releases include Guillermo Del Toro's latest film Pacific Rim and Adam Sandler makes a return with Grown Ups 2--Which one of these will be the bigger draw?  Betting is now open!

As always, what did YOU see, OT...and was it any good?

Shouldn't make stupid movies with bad plots.

It has like 25% on RT, and it's based on a series that has no significance to anybody born after the 70s, what do they expect?

It almost didn't get made because of the budget alone.

I don't think Pacific Rim will do crazy numbers, but it should be fine.. maybe. I don't know. It's getting advertised well enough, but I don't think audiences will flock to something that looks so generic. Who knows. That Adam Sandler vehicle will do the expected numbers for its opening weekend, then plummet in the coming weeks.

It's going to be interesting to see which does better next week. I'm surprised that Warner Bros. gave the movie such a prime slot to open in. I guess they have enough faith in it to become a possible new franchise, especially since it seems rare to see any studio take that kind of chance lately, going with nothing but sequels and remakes. As far as Sandler goes, I think it may do better, if only for the reason that its a sequel to a movie people reconize, and it 's one of his bigger hits.

I'm not surprised by Despicable Me 2. The first movie was funny and the minions were great. The second was as funny if not more so than the first and the minions were an even bigger part of the movie which was a great move.

I read that the Minions are allegedly getting a spinoff movie within the next two years; it's supposed to be about how they came to be.

It's a movie that makes you wonder who exactly was this movie was made for. It's trying to appeal for younger people who more than likely never heard of the Lone Ranger, while alienating older people who are probably fans. From what I read, there's a scene where The Ranger says his famous line "Hi-ho Silver, away!", and Tonto makes fun of him for saying that.

Pacific Rim looks good but any hype I had for it was destroyed when I saw Star Trek: Into Darkness. My friend talked for 15 minutes about how much he wanted to see it and how good it looked. It was very annoying.

Not surprised The Lone Ranger flopped. It's got John Carter written all over it.

This summer has really sucked for Hollywood. I personally have yet to see a movie this year, whereas last year I saw 3 or 4 movies. Pacific Rim looks damn good however.

I haven't seen an animated show as polarizing as the first. A lot of people adore it, while many of the others think it's garbage. I seem to be one of the few in the middle.

this has been hollywood's most profitable summer yet. With Iron Man 3 (hitting a billion dollars) and man of steel breaking records becoming june's biggest opener in history. I think its been pretty good myself.

It had Johnny Depp, so they may thought he be enough to make a movie, about a show they loved when they were kids relevant again.

I saw The Lone Ranger today and I thought it was actually pretty good. It seemed like the quintessential summer movie. Lots of action, some humour, a somewhat lacking plot. Maybe because I didn't know anything about the Lone Ranger franchise and didn't take the film too seriously, I had a good time. Hell, if the second and third Pirates movies made a crap ton of money, I don't see why the Lone Ranger wouldn't.

I really enjoyed it! I dont understand the hate for it. Despite one sscene the goes a bit too far in how dark it gets, I thought it was a fun film in the same vein of Pirates of the Caribbean. Whole time it feels like Pirates in the West.

Went to the drive in on the 4th. The two movies were Monsters University and The Lone Ranger. Monsters University was fantastic. We tried watching The Lone Ranger, but it was pretty bad. We moved to a different screen and watched The Internship, which was decent. I'd like to see The Heat next.

Its a remake, it wa made to appeal to a different audiance. I didnt know what was based on till i looked it up. To me it looked like a great western with Depp made by the pirates team.

Not surprised about the Lone Ranger. Billing Armie Hammer with Depp was a bad move I feel. I had to look up who he was after I heard of the movie. It also just looked extremely bland and it was basically Jack Sparrow if he was a Native American. I guess Disney will just have to start putting even more into the Marvel films as they show no sign of slowing down.

As for Pacific Rim, I am shocked to see just how heavily it is being marketed. I am aware that it looks like a typical summer blockbuster, but I thought they might try and grab more of a niche audience with the Kaiju stuff. I think the cast is going to help the sales as well. Rather than casting movie stars, they cast TV stars. Hunnam and Perlman are pretty popular from SoA as is Charlie Day from IASIP and Idris Elba. Still I am super excited and I hope it does well. Maybe if this makes enough Del Toro will be given a good budget and free reign over At the Mountains of Madness.

Very interesting indeed. Although very late to make such a drastic change in marketing strategy, I feel as though this last week is when the undecided moviegoers can be wooed. I guess as a new franchsie they felt the need to lay all the cards on the table and not hold much back for the actual film. Again, hope it pays off for them, while I haven't seen the film yet, it would be nice to see an original film and some new faces at the top of the box office for once.

Also, not sure if you are aware or care, but in Canada the film will be the first to offer the Super Ticket which gives a ticket to the movie, as well as an UltraViolet digital copy of the film when it is released. Not sure how this type of deal will be calculated in terms of box office.

True. But somehow, I think most audiences are going to go with something familiar, so they might flock to see Grown-Ups 2 instead. I could be wrong, though.

I think the only film that Disney won't have to worry about is when the new Star Wars comes out in 2015...Unless the reviews are poor and/or people refuse to watch it. Unlikely, but who knows?
