The state of day one patches for games

In recent years it seems almost every high profile game release has been marred by major bugs on release day effecting say a minimum of 20% of players.

I was wondering whether anyone in the industry knew whether this was due to an increase in the complexity of game or whether it was due to publishers keeping to unrealistic release dates.

I am not saying games today are worse than games of a decade ago, but i do not remember playing older games and having to download say 5 - 10 patches before most of the bugs were fixed.

Any general comments welcome.

You'd probably get more answers on the games discussion board.

As for your question I suspect a few reasons. Games today are more complex and therefore launch with more bugs, deadlines are too tight, and sometimes just because they can.

Indeed, OT is a game free discussion zone.
