The Little Mermaid Gets a Dark Remake

The latest rage in movies is to take old familiar fairy tales and give them a fresh, dark twist. We have three Snow White movies, two Oz remakes, and a villainous Peter Pan adaptation on the horizonto go along withRed Riding Hoodwhich limped out of theaters earlier this year.

Now,The Little Mermaidis getting the remake treatment, but it's not the lobster-singing songfest that Disney brought us in 1989. In this version, a princess who tries to marry a prince learns she already has competition from a mermaid who has sacrificed everything to be with him. This version mirrors the original tale which found Sirenetta (not Ariel) in a love triangle that ends with her either murdering the Prince or dissolving "in the water like the foam on a wave."

Shana Feste, who gave us Gwyneth Paltrow singing country songs in last year'sCountry Strong, will be writing and directing this remake, titledMermaid: A Twist on the Clas.sic Tale, for Sony Pictures.

So what do you think? Up for a dark mermaid tale? Who would you like to see in the mermaid role?

The Little Mermaid is supposed to be dark.

I'm quite interested in this.

The Japanese already made a Little Mermaid movie back in 1975 that was more in keeping with the original Han Christian Andersen story and hence it ends on a pretty damned grim note. Here watch the depressing ending that used to make my girlfriend cry so much as her sad little dolphin friend cries out for her.

This is seriously like saying Frankenstein gets a remake in which the Monster actually talks and has feelings.

That's how it was supposed to be.

Actually, this sounds more or less like the original story of The Little Mermaid. It's not a dark remake, Disney's version is actually a sugary happy remake.

THe Little Mermaid wasn't suposed to have a fairy tale ending in the first place...just hoped the movie doesn't go like Little Red Riding Hood. :P

As long as Tim Burton has nothing to do with this it might be good.
