Come on guys, you know it's his third nipple, it told him. Knew it as soon as Damon opened the door, said there's Wahlberg's third nipple instinct again.
If you liked the Departed, watch Infernal Affairs, since it was based off that movie. The story is a lot more cohesive and I found it easier to follow.
That is left open to interpretation. The two possibilities are that the casette given to Matt Damon is passed on to Wahlberg, who is able to put the whole story together and take action in his own violent way, or alternatively, that Wahlberg too was a part of Costello's crew, and was sent - or chose - to kill Damon after he shot Costello.
