Fourth-grader Aiden Stewart was suspended Friday for bringing what he claimed was the One Ring, forged by Sauron in the fires of Mount Doom, to school. Stewart told a classmate the ring could make him disappear, which, if it really were the One Ring, it could.

Stewart's father Jason said the Texas family had recently seen The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. "Stewart said the principal said threats to another child's safety would not be tolerated—whether magical or not," according.

"I assure you my son lacks the magical powers necessary to threaten his friend's existence," Jason Stewart wrote in an email to the New York Daily News. "If he did, I'm sure he'd bring him right back."

Source.

How would you deal with such a menace?

"This is the third time Aiden has been suspended this year. His father told the Daily News that Aiden was suspended once for referring to another student as black and another time for bringing The Big Book of Knowledge, a children's encyclopedia to school, which his teacher discovered contained an illustration of a pregnant woman."

Is that face for the fact that he got suspended 3 times for stupid things or because the kid's parents keep taking him back to that stupid school? =P

I'm skeptical of the validity of this story. Tracing back to the original source it looks like all the information is coming from the father, and the school refused to comment on confidential student information including suspension. Kid probably did something dumb and got suspended so the father took advantage of the situation and sought the media to make his kid look better. I suppose it could be true but it's to nonsensical to actually be.

Schools once again showing with their idiotic zero tolerance that it's wrong for children to have an imagination.

I really do worry about future generations...

But they can. I got suspended for two weeks for sharpening my pencil without asking the teacher.

The pencil sharpener was on the wall, literally right where my desk was, so I didn't have to get up. I figured since I didn't have to get up, I shouldn't have to ask. Guess what? I got wrote up and was sent home for 2 weeks about 30 mins after that happened.

This was many years ago. But still, nothing new to me.

One does not simply take the One Ring to school without being suspended.

Was this a public school or a private religious school or charter school?

This sounds pretty stupid on its own, but considering he was suspended for referring to someone as black and another time for having a book with an illustration of a pregnant woman... what kind of Mickey Mouse institution of education are they running there?

If the kid's exact words were "make him disappear" anybody that is totally clueless about Lord of the Rings or the fact that the One Ring makes you invisible may have assumed that "disappear" was another way of saying he was going to kill him. As long as I can remember and long before I even heard of Lord of the Rings, I've know that saying somebody will disappear could be interpreted as killing them or kidnapping them as a minimum.

While the situation is overkill, sometimes we shouldn't assume that people will know the same slang and stories that we know and dismiss them as stupid because they don't. A good example of that is in the military people with the job of artillery forward observers have had the nickname "FiSTers" forever. FiST actually stands for Fire Support Team but if you don't know anything about it you're probably going to assume they're talking about something entirely different.

Then there's the possibility that the dad just exaggerated the story. A lot of parents have the "not my kid" attitude going on right now to the point that they swear that they are angels until video footage shows otherwise.

You can't blame the school for suspending the kid, it was necessary for the safety of the other students. If that student had been allowed to bring the One Ring to school and kept telling other students about it, word would have gotten out and soon enough the Nazgul would go paying that school a visit.

Ok, if this is the third time for this kid to get suspended and again under the grounds of complete dipshit insanity, then it's time to switch schools. I'm so fucking astounded that a backward-ass school like this actually exists.

At the very most I can see something like that being at risk of a detention (and even then a detention for that is rather stupid and unnecessary) but a suspension? For two weeks? That's just mind-blowing stupid and unnecessary.

And I see schools nowadays still are reaching new lows, and still enjoy breaking stupidity barriers. Far too many schools out there that needs certain teachers/principals/school administrators fired/impeached.

an american one, where biting your snack into "the shape of a gun" gets you suspended in kindergarten, not being able to defend yourself without being suspended, and where if you see a kid take a razor to school to cut themself and you take it away from them and turn it in YOU get suspended for it. The school systems here are so pussified in order to protect themselves

Welcome to America. They're probably going to have armed guards in classrooms and take the kids thumbprints soon.
