My 4 year old son was recently diagnosed with ADHD. This was after numerous doctor visits and several diagnosis tests. However I can't tell you much beyond what you could read on Wikipedia. This was all less than a month ago. So we're still trying to find out of medication is the right path to take given how young he is.

From what I've read the standard medication isn't particularly addictive. But the human body tends to build up an immunity to it extremly fast. Which has the same outcome I suppose.

On top of that ADHD is one of the most misdiagnosed afflictions, in children in particular. Which is also why medication should be a last resort. Their are doctors and professional consolers that can help someone with ADHD learn how to minimize the problems it tends to cause without the use of medication.

I guess he feels better, he's also hyperactive but he's pretty calm during the day after he's had his tablets.

I kick it old school son, I've got A.D.D. You kids these days, with your hyperactivity, your 3D movies, and your rock 'n roll. Stop eating so much sugar I tells ya. I remember, I was seven I think, when I was diagnosed. Man it was so boring going from hospital to hospital, test after test. I was only on the meds' for about two years, stopped taking them after that because I just felt off when I took them; like I was wasn't comfortable with myself.

*edit

My cousin supposedly has ADHD, but they're not sure.

No, I was never hyperactive. I'm pretty mellow, It's just I never seem to put full attention to anything I'm doing. Finishing my homework was always a drag, I was bored ofit halfway through.

I'm diagnosed, I saw a doctor for it two years ago (who said, "Yes, you definitely have it.") and I was put on medication for it for almost a year. The medication didn't help, I changed it twice and never had any results.

It does make school more challenging, with great difficulty paying attention in class, reading long texts and getting certain work done. Apart from that, there are other notable symptoms that I show (but may or may not be the case for others diagnosed). These include constantly shaking my leg without realizing it, having difficulty making even the simplest of decisions, getting offended or upset about the most minor issues or remarks, being unable to decide on what order to perform multiple tasks and my mind becoming cluttered and difficult to function, often feeling like a television with all the channels turned on at once.

It does make daily activities hard, underachievement is often a feeling and coping with certain situations becomes unnecessarily difficult. I believe it would be easier for people to deal with if they have people around them to understand what they are dealing with, or at least not criticize or make judgements. Such an environment can cause one who is diagnosed to become insecure about their issues and have difficulty sharing it with professionals or close friends/family members. Take it from someone with this kind of experience.

Everyone has their own way out of it, but I have yet to find mine.

I absolutely forgot what this topic was about when i got distracted by a pretty bird and then went to eat some cookies. I meant to reply sooner but i decided to go run a mile and was out longer than expected because i forgot how to get home. I am also typing this while standing up and with one hand as the other is trying to hold my figgiting leg still.

No, but there is someone I know who has ADD. Only a slight case, though. The person does not take medicine.

Probably Adderall? Yep, them things are great, but make you not yourself. Also they keep you up all night, which is fine if you have more for the next day, but if not it really sucks if you got stuff you got to do.

Their are doctors and professional consolers that can help someone with ADHD learn how to minimize the problems it tends to cause without the use of medication.

keech

I do know that medication helped me during school quite a bit. Though in the end it's best that your son learns to live without it. I know when I was in about 8th grade I stopped taking my medication because I did not like the effects that it had on me, I had been on it since 4th grade. While I still have ADHD I learned to live with it and I've never once blamed it for any of my shortcomings in my academic career.

People who use ADHD as an excuse really don't have ADHD, especially when they are my age (I'm 22). They would have learned how to deal with it by then.

I think the best advice I can give you is to make sure you teach your son exactly what ADHD means. If he knows exactly what it does, as he grows older he will learn to adapt better as he will find ways of coping without any medication.

ADHD also means an extremely active mind usually meaning a higher IQ and much more capability for high intelligence. It's not all a curse. The hardest part with ADHD isn't learning, it's staying focused on doing the work required to get through grade school. Now I'm on my last year of earning my degree in Software Engineering, and the hardest part hasn't been the learning, it's just been the dedication to the work and fighting the distractions. That's the most difficult part of having ADHD. All of us learn to deal with it differently. I'm sure with better guidance I could have learned more effective methods of dealing with my ADHD, but I got by just fine.
