Ok my parents friend is selling his 2000 Jetta (not sure which version, i only remember the engine had a "2.0" on it). He wants 3,500 for it. This will be my first car so and to me it look great. Everthing is clean. The owner said he has been up with all maintenance but both the ABS and Check engine light are on...but he said he'll fix it before giving it to me. So what do you guys think? I drove it and it seemed really smooth and i really liked it (was using my sis hyundai tiburon ha) so yea? I only plan on using it to go to school

3500 for a car witth 151,000 ? i wouldnt do it. When i officially started car looking in february it took me until july to find the perfect car(2000 Chevy Prizm with only 51,251 miles on it) for only 3500. If you need a car ASAP then i guess buy it but expect problems

My most recent car I got was a 2001 Ford Ranger with 25,000 miles on it for $2000. The owner had died so the family was trying to get rid of it asap so I got lucky. Either way I would not buy a used car with that many miles personally.

Don't do it! 1st of all 151,xxx miles is a lot!!! Second it's a VW. Pretty sure those are somewhat pricey to repair.

Unless the seller has detailed maintenance records for ANY 2000-2003 1.8, 2.0, or VR6 VW-Audi car, beware. To be certain of reliability, the car needs to have had g20 coolant and high quality synthetic oil in the engine. This is especially true for the turbocharged models (there is an issue with the diameter of the oil feed and return lines, oil filter flow rate, and oil pump, and this especially affects the turbo). If the correct oil is not used, the engine will slowly deteriorate. The Jetta will likely need a number of minor repairs and replacements. With that said, check the sunroof drain! Between the front doors and the body panel you will see a rubber hose that looks like the mouth of a wooded instrument. Place pressure on this hose. If water pours out, this means that there are sunroof drain issues (which means water gets into the interior of the car); it will need to be cleaned regularly. Do not trust anyone that says that they have had their German car "maintained" unless they can provide receipts from a VW-Audi dealership (and even then...) or a German specialist with Vag-Com software. Otherwise the chances of the car having been "properly maintained" are slim. These cars need to have been taken care of properly, largely due to VW-Audi cutting cutting costs on a number of parts and fabrication procedures. If the car was really taken care of properly, it could last you well past 300,000 miles. If it wasn't, it could make your life a nightmare for 50,000 miles until it tells you to go to hell. Since the car's CEL is on, I would suggest steering clear unless you like working on cars. My ultimate advice? Never buy a German car unless you have the money to buy a German car, and 3500 isn't enough to buy a German car.

That price seems a bit high for 151,000 miles...to me that sounds like you could be close to an engine overhaul (rings, pistons, valves, you name it).

A ten year old car with 150K miles on it, from a manufacturer with one of the worst reliability records. Going to have to say no to that.

No way. That car isn't worth near 3500. And you're paying for a car with a ton of miles which is sure to have reliability issues, and German cars are extremely expensive to fix.

Too many miles for the price. Chances are that it will require work. I wouldn't do it.

It's just not worth it. you could get a better deal on a honda, and it would, you know, last. And even if it didn't, it would cost like 1/3 as much to fix.

Exactly. There's no way in hell I would spend $3500 on that.

Dont buy a used VW anything. Unless its new enough that the tires still have pokey things on them its almost guaranteed to have problems way before you are ready for it to have problems.
