I imagine many of you might have caught this on numerous other sites, but for those who might not know, It looks like Preacher could be headed for television after being stuck for years in Development Hell.

On his Twitter account, Rogen posted two tweets yesterday that hint of what project he might be working on soon:

#1- Looks like about seven of years of hard work are about to pay off. I may get to bring one of my favourite stories ever to life.

#2- Arseface. John Wayne, The Saint of Killers.

There are a number of sites out there that hint that AMC may be the network that could possibly air it, if things go through. HBO was working on it a few years back with director Mark Steven Johnson (Daredevil) developing it, but ultimately passed on it.

It's all rumor for the time being, but what do you think? Could this be something that may pan out--and if so, could this work because of--or in spite of--Seth Rogen being involved? Does he have any business messing with this to begin with?

I'm wondering what the extent of his involvement is in this. My guess, he could be the writer/showrunner.

I sure hope not. But you're probably right. Either way I'll still watch the pilot if it comes out.

I'd never heard of the comic, but the premise sounds interesting. I'd definitely give it a shot.

I have to dig out the copies of the trade paperbacks I had from storage--haven't read it in years, myself--but it's definitely an interesting read.

Well, TV would certainly be the right format for it. I believe there was a movie being planned at some point, and that would be the wrong way to go. If this were to go ahead, it would NEED to be a TV series on a network like HBO.

AMC might work, but honestly I think the comics were a little bit too f***ed up for AMC. Basic cable with the censoring means drastic reductions in the violence, sexual content, and profanity. Especially the profanity. As far as sexuality and violence goes, they could do a lot with some creative editing. But the profanity needs to f***ing stay.

Anyway, I doubt that anything will come of this. It's been tried before, I don't expect it to work this time. And that's just talking about actually getting it on TV. Even if this actually becomes a show, I don't see it being too successful.

From what I read years ago, the story is kinda too obscene for regular TV. Not to mention the controversial religious aspects of it such as saying that God chicken'd out of redemption by letting Jesus live (and having him dying at old age trampled by a wagon), etc. It's not soft porn drama like GoT.

Yeah...it could still be good on a network like AMC. And if it were to be basic cable, then AMC is probably who would give it the best treatment.

Still...it really ought to be on HBO. AMC might turn out a good show that keeps most of the big essentials of the story intact, but I can't see it not coming off as just a neutered and watered-down version of the comics.

There is 0 chance of Preacher the TV series staying true to the source material. It's way too ridiculous.

It's a crapshoot at this point. As far as the profanity, the only thing I can think about getting around that would probably bleep out some of the more harsher obsenitites (**** would definitely be out), but have them unbleeped for the DVD release, if the show makes it that far.

As far as it being on AMC, it could definitely work in its favor, but even better might be just to skip the cable networks completely and just premiere it on Netflix, that way it could just go balls out. Original shows seem to be working for them so far.

Maybe you're right and nothing will come of this. But with Mad Men ending soon and Breaking Bad finished, they're gonna need some more shows beside The Walking Dead. I can see AMC possibly jumping on this and try making this a show.

That's true (on your last comment...I don't know why GS makes us quote entire posts instead of just part of a post. But even if a lot of their big hits are either gone or going away, they've gotta have safer material in the pipeline than freaking Preacher.

Assuming that it would stay true to the comics, this just doesn't seem like a "safe" show for basic cable. The "inappropriate for basic cable" stuff wasn't just an occasional part of the comics, it was PERVASIVE. Add to that, the religious themes have the potential to piss people off and hurt ratings (let's not forget how the comics made freaking GOD into a huge f***ing @$$hole). But hey, edgy is in, right? Unfortunately, this also seems like it might need a significant budget to be done properly. This isn't just people standing around in an RV arguing about meth. There are big gunfights, at least one nuclear explosion, special effects driven setpieces, etc. Probably wouldn't come close to being the most expensive show ever made, but I doubt it would be cheap. That, coupled with a story that has the potential to turn a lot of people off, makes me just see this as sort of a risk.

I'm not saying that AMC won't pick it up, but I've gotta figure that they've got safer material to bet on than this. And I've gotta say that even if it gets made and even if it's actually GOOD, it probably won't be the Preacher that comics fans know and love.

He is a comedic actor though.... Preacher from what I've heard is quite serious (It's on my buy list). So that's a bad idea. I can't imagine it being on TV anyways so I doubt anything will come of this.

That's the thing--If it is true, I don't think he's going to be anywhere in front of the camera, but probably behind the scenes as a producer or maybe a writer.
