This BBC article points out that pupils' proficiency with mathematics and science is a strong indicator of a nation's future economic success, then goes on to rank 76 nations according to their pupils' accomplishments.

I don't know how much credibility can be given to a list that ranks the US (28th) above Mother Russia (34th), but here it is anyway.

See how your country fared ...

1. Singapore
2. Hong Kong
3. South Korea
4. Japan (joint)
4. Taiwan (joint)
6. Finland
7. Estonia
8. Switzerland
9. Netherlands
10. Canada
11. Poland
12. Vietnam
13. Germany
14. Australia
15. Ireland
16. Belgium
17. New Zealand
18. Slovenia
19. Austria
20. United Kingdom
21. Czech Republic
22. Denmark
23. France
24. Latvia
25. Norway
26. Luxembourg
27. Spain
28. Italy (joint)
28. United States (joint)
30. Portugal
31. Lithuania
32. Hungary
33. Iceland
34. Russia
35. Sweden
36. Croatia
37. Slovak Republic
38. Ukraine
39. Israel
40. Greece
41. Turkey
42. Serbia
43. Bulgaria
44. Romania
45. UAE
46. Cyprus
47. Thailand
48. Chile
49. Kazakhstan
50. Armenia
51. Iran
52. Malaysia
53. Costa Rica
54. Mexico
55. Uruguay
56. Montenegro
57. Bahrain
58. Lebanon
59. Georgia
60. Brazil
61. Jordan
62. Argentina
63. Albania
64. Tunisia
65. Macedonia
66. Saudi Arabia
67. Colombia
68. Qatar
69. Indonesia
70. Botswana
71. Peru
72. Oman
73. Morocco
74. Honduras
75. South Africa
76. Ghana

Surprisingly high:

  • Canada (10th): Perhaps maple syrup boosts IQ?
  • Vietnam (12th): Having malaria doesn't affect your ability to excel at mathematics.

Surprisingly low:

  • Russia (34th): The tests were obviously marked by anti-Russian zealots.
  • Sweden (35th): Multiculturalism is really working wonders for this country.
  • Israel (39th): Cheer up. You can always blame the Palestinians.
  • South Africa (75th): Well at least you beat Ghana. Perhaps reinstating apartheid is the solution?

As a military brat, I studied abroad in Japanese and German schools when I was younger because my folks lived in the local area. I didn't go to a US school until we went back to the US.

Two top 20s for my home and adoptive countries - whether this translates to anything useful for the people living there though is another matter!

*shrugs*

I'm fine with that. I'm less concerned with my home country kicking the rest of the world's asses, and more interested in how well so much of the rest of the world is doing. Hooray for HUMANITY.

I'm terrible at math and science. My terribleness in science is likely due to lots of math being present in that subject. I've been bad at math since the start.

I was pretty bad at math for the longest time until a vet math professional told me his secrets. It was like I had opened the Pandora box.

Interesting list, loved the commentary in particular :P

The Netherlands is doing quite well for the western hemisphere, although it's Asia that's excelling in those two subjects, which doubtfully comes as a surprise. There are, nevertheless, surprising ranks: Vietnam 12th? Impressive, Estonia 7th? Would've never seen that coming, UAE 45th? What do you know. I know it's not a high rank but for my perception of the country it's commendable.

As for Israel, well, all that indiscriminate mass immigration is finally penalizing the Jewish state so I'm not surprised. The Ashkenazim effect is wearing off haha

Gefeliciteerd, maar ik geef nog de voorkeur aan je zuidelijke buren :3

How do you say "I prefer" in Dutch? To my knowledge you use the adverb liever, but in this instance to prefer is the finite verb rather than part of the verbal group. I just contrived this de voorkeur geven aan but it doesn't seem the right one.

You said it right, but no one really talks like that. You would need to make a whole different sentence which boils down to the same thing.

Well, the stupid half of my country is filled with rednecks who deny science, and the only math they can do is when they count the bullets they store for "fightin' the gubment", so I assume pretty low....28th.

The U.S. News and World Report, a highly respected ranking system, ranks United States colleges at the top.

I think that this is about high school, and not college.

@deeliman: Okay. As far as high school, America could definitely do better.

High school in Hong Kong would probably be an amazing experience.

There's lots of countries missing though...

China, India, Sri Lanka, and pretty much all of South America.

27th and 28th... honestly both countries should be higher up on the list. I can confirm the Spanish education system is shit.
