I have a little interesting debate here for you guys: That book, "The Secret" came out and it's a huge success. For those of you who don't know about it, here is what it says: Anything you want (I mean ANYTHING) can be yours through the power of positive thinking. If you visualize yourself getting a promotion, and think you will get it, it will happen. Here is where it get's to "out there" for me to believe. When people eat unhealthy foods, they get fat, NOT because of the nutrition of the food, but because THEY believe they will get fat. If you believe you won't get fat, and you still eat very unhealthy foods alot, you won't get fat. I find that it is good to live your life in optimism, however there comes a time (the second example) when optimism turns into a delusion. Anyways, your thoughts?

Load of crap. "If you think you won't get fat, you won't." So I guess I can jump off of a tall building and fly if I believe it?

Those were my thoughts. I think it is horrible to believe something that calls for physical impossibilty

Well to me it has nothing to do with the universe...it's just that when you really want something you really work for it, and you eventually get it. I mean all of the example they give in the book and the documentary are through the will of the own person....It wasn't like they wished for 2 million dollars and then a week later a breifcase was outside their door with the money, so in the end as always it comes down to oneself perservering and working hard to achieve your goals...

Yeah, unfortunately we don't live in a fantasy world, as much as that would be nice.  The book seems to set aside the fact that we are guided by physical nature.  And what does the book say when it comes to other people?  "You can get the girl you want if you just believe it!"  As if the other person doesn't have a free will.  It's a load of rehash crap.  I hate positive thinking, it's a load of bull**** that plays merely off of placebo effect and momentum.

As cynical as it sounds, that's deluded thinking. The only place I can see positive thinking actually helping is in matters involving confidence. "Believing" in it won't bring people back from the dead or stop you growing old.

It certainly made me think a little more positively about things. However, that does not mean I think I'll get things by wanting them really badly. I'll let my actions speak for themselves, I guess.

Yes! for only 5 easy payments of $249.95, you too can believe in fairy tales while simutaneiously flushing your hard earned money down the toilet! Let me get this straight: They're saying that if you're doing something bad for you, but believe that no harm will come, then it'll come true? Maybe if I believe that stupid people who buy this crap will no longer reproduce, it'll spare the rest of the world their dumb-assery.

Maybe they're right. We read stuff like that because people all our lives have been telling us it's "common sense". I'm not saying it's true I'm just throwing an idea out there.

Quite silly if you ask me. I could shoot myself in the head, and if I think I won't die, I'm alright?

Optimism just sets you up for a greater fall. You can visualize about getting that promotion all you want, but you'll soon realize that you'll have to stop being a hobo and get a job.

I think positive thinking has some effect, but you have to do the work that the promotion or whatever requires. Thinking positively about it does nothing without the effort.
