Well i'm just curious to know the truth. (out of the two)

Was the Jeep(r) the first small vehicle used by the US army on deployment

or was it the Hummer/vee (r) like the company GM claim.

?

I think it was Jeep because everybody calls those types of cars jeeps like the way all cola gets called coke even in wargames :).

I just saw Jeep released a [jeep] caled the patriot and it resparked the question in my mind.

Gooood question. I know the story behind the vehicle, the army had an maximum weight limit for the vehicle and the company who got the contract made it by stripping out the primer paint and removing as much useless material as possible. Every nut and bolt was calculated, and if I'm correct, I think it was the Jeep.

I may be wrong about what came first, but the weight part I'm sure of.

The Willys MB 4x4 truck (nicknamed "Jeep,") was developed in around 1939 or 1940 for the US Military, and was released to the civilian market in 1945 or 1946. I'm not sure when the jeep bradning started. The Willys MB was replaced in military service in I think 1946 with the Willys M38 (simply an upgrade version of the MB) and this model and its deratives was made on the civilian until around 1987. Ford made the next military version of the jeep in the 1960s (Ford M151).

The High Mobility Multipurpouse Wheeled Vehicle (aka HMMWV or HumVee) replaced the Ford M151 in 1985 or 1986 in military service and was released commerically in 1995, and now has its own brand. The cilivilan version of the HMMWV which was called Hummer H1 when another Hummer model was released, is no longer made.
