music is actually getting worse, theres no denying it. and when i say music i mean music that is played on the mainstream radio stations. the same radio station that i listened to as a kid that played GOOD music is playing GARBAGE music today.

i chose a random year from the VMA music awards (2003) and when comparing it to 2013 VMA music awards the difference in quality and creativity is absolutely MIND BLOWNING:

2003:

2013:

You have no idea about good music if you're mainly listening to stuff made after the 19th century. So don't complain about the minuscule differences between 2013 and 2003. Cause they're both shit anyway. Music died a long long time ago.

You may want to re-think your argument for this topic.

Timberlake is still actively in the game though. He's been a big star since the late 90's and is still able to compete with the newer talent.

Speaking of 1 Direction, I first heard about them from this site, on a thread by HarryOsborn.

Edit: Selena Gomez isn't bad. Not really the type of music I like, but she doesn't bother me. "If you want it" was pretty decent.

It's all the same shit. Bands from the 90's like Nirvana and Alice In Chains suck donkey ass to me and other bands were good. Same thing with today's artists but I don't go around claiming that these bands made music worse because they didn't. They're just bands I don't like and everyone is just bitter that their favorite artists aren't as mainstreem as they used to be. Most bands were in the mainstreem spotlight back then and now that they're out of the spotlight, they are still VERY commercial making the whole "mainstreem sucks" argument very hypocritical.

I actually think it has been getting better recently. So far, the (20)10's has been pretty decent compared to how flat the 2nd half of 00's was...

I think mainstream hiphop has been getting worse.

Still a few that I find will be relevant in years to come, like Kendrick Lamar.

I just listen to old music. Either all music being made today suck hard, or I just don't find the good stuff in the heaps of crap. If anyone knows of new music that doesn't sound like it's made by a retarded child, please let me know.

Boy bands are for little girls. They have never been good. Anyway stop listening to the pop music and find music elsewhere. Nothing has changed. Anything popular HAS to appeal to the lowest common denominator which makes it less interesting. Catchy tune and a repeated refrain. Same as it always was.....

I'm a Serius XM subscriber and that SXM is were it's at as far as good music comes. My station on SXM: Octane, (love that station for it's hard rock) Lithium, Hip-Hop Nation, (I basically listen to old school hip-hop) Bone yard. People still listen to Radios?

any argument like this is generational. People love with they love because they listen to it all of their life. I'm a fan of Outkast pink Tupac biggie Jay Z Michael Jackson Frank Sinatra new edition etc.. People like what they like generally because they were raised on it and heard of most of their life were heavily influenced by their parents or some other outside influence like church or something. Do I think top music today sucks? Yes I do! But its not meant for me and probably is not meant for you either.

What qualifies as a boy band?

I don't know when exactly it can be proven when real music died, there is even good bands and bad bands even in the 1980's, but I definitely find the 1980's one of the more better decades in terms of legendary music. So yeah, I think it can be argued that the 1980's has lots of music that's still great and good in quality, whether someone deems that decade of having real music in it or not. But to be fair, I'm sure other decades are like that too, have to admit I also found some gems in the 70's and 90's era as well. Still, I just find it that the 80's has the most gems though, but I guess it can still be personal preference. (Having the 1980's be among favorites I think is good personal preference however. :P )

Pop music is... well, popular. You're just getting older. There's research into why when you get older you basically stick to music styles of the past (and music that share's its characteristics) and are less receptive to newer music.

I agree the reason I like listening to 80's music is because I grew up in that era I can relate to it. I can't listen to todays music it just doesn't appeal to me I don't know maybe I'm getting old.

I don't get it. Both those selections were horrible. I stick to older rock for quality, as a lot of that at least has people playing the music. ANd often it had soul or meaning behind the words, now it's **** grind **** suck **** grind. No longer interested personally, and it's why I don't generally partake in the past time of music.

Aside from music being generational, they can also be genre-based which can cross different generations.

For example, Jimmy Eat World's I Will steal You Back can be considered old-school classic rock (it is to me). Yet, it came out only in 2013.

As far as pop music goes, that's got some up and down to it. I mean, C'mon, Bruno Mars is killer. I don't like all of his music but he's absurdly talented. Rock musicianship, with a few exceptions, has pretty much been on the decline since the early 90's. There's few bands since then that have come out since that time which I really like. Recently, I've been digging the latest "Pretty Reckless" titled "Going to Hell". That's kind of been a breath of fresh air. I dig Halestorm too. I keep waiting for a Sammy Hagar level male rock singer to come out and knock my socks off but it just hasn't happened yet. Chad Kroeger from nickel back is good but all of his stuff sounds the same to me. To me he's been about the best to come out in the last 15 years but I'm still not that impressed with him. Adam Lambert could become one of the all time great rock singers if he'd stop doing that pop crap. He is singing for queen now so there's that...

Music is not getting worse, no way. There's so much good music being made, you just need to hunt for it. VMA's is not the place to find it.

Speaking from my experience here.

I know someone who likes to freakin listens to Linkin Park and new artists like Jason Derulo, Taylor Swift, and Bruno Mars. He's on his way to his 60's and I don't know what you guys considered what age "old" is but I think it's maybe some of you pops are cynical.
