Not that "Indie rock" by one guy with a guitar and a terrible voice singing about butterflies; but real good indie music. Indie music is defined as music produced independently from major commercial record labels or their subsidiaries.

Here are some of mine:

Angus and Julia Stone - "Hold on"

Coeur de Pirate - "Fondu au Noir"

Let's Buy Happiness - "Works Better on Paper"

Gord Downie - "As a Mover"

Hannah Georgas - "Robotic"

Hugh Dillon - "Ten Feet Tall"

Of Monsters and Men - "Dirty Paws"

Gregory Alan Isakov - "Big Black Car"

Kitten - Sugar

Voxhaul Broadcast - Blackout

The Neighbourhood - Female Robbery

DyE - Fantasy (Probably one of the most listened to songs on my ipod)

STRFKR - Bury Us Alive

Agreed, kinda ridiculous to show off Of Monsters and Men as Indie.

I like a bunch of Indie bands that are now on bigger labels like Modest Mouse, Interpol, and the like. I also like Starfvcker, Dananananakyroyd and Death From Above 1979

A record label from Iceland isn't indie?

Universal

They also seem to go against everything you were saying, they sing about animals and stuff. When I was reading your first paragraph about "indie" music you don't like, my first thought was literally "oh this sounds like he's talking about Of Monsters & Men"

Well, they were originally signed with Record Records in Iceland. But, no, they are not one guy with a guitar and a terrible voice singing about butterflies; what I meant by that was the kind of **** on the soundtrack for the movie Juno.

I could never get into their "Young Folks" song, but the one you linked is pretty good so far.

It's worth noting that a number of indie bands form their own record labels (Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse formed Glacial Pace Records) but may sign distribution deals with larger labels that possess more resorces.

And now for the tunes:

Why do people even care whether the music they listen to is indie or not?

Because not everyone only wants to hear what's popular. There is also some good music that doesn't get much radio play, you know.

It's not what I meant. My question to its core - why do people want to put tags on everything?

If you like folk and don't mind it being fairly dark, I strongly recommend checking out Chelsea Wolfe and King Dude.

Movie Screen - Chelsea Wolfe

Moses - Chelsea Wolfe

Barbara Anne - King Dude

Jesus in the Courtyard - King Dude

Not everything that has some connection to the major music labels is popular or gets airplay. Does being released via a big music industry label make something less enjoyable? Does something being "indie" make it more enjoyable?
