And the liberal mainstream media acts like he is a heroic social progressive for doing so.

This of course completely contradicts the concept of sports being a display of competitive physical athleticism, because the physically disabled are by definition uncompetitive with regards to physical athleticism. Next Obama will likely be saying that the mentally disabled have a right to participate in math and debate teams.

Obviously the disabled should be able to organize and come up with alternative athletic activities for them to participate in, but they shouldn't be used as a tool to undermine competitiveness for those who aren't inhibited by physical disabilities. This is just another example of the government using public schools to push a political agenda.

You know in elementary or middle school where you act like you hate a girl to overcompensate the fact that you REALLY like her? The girl is Obama and the guy "hating" her is Laihendi.

For those of us familiar with sports, there are various LEVELS of sports. Varsity, Junior Varsity, Freshman, etc. Essentially, you can compete at different levels based on your ability. But beyond that, we have the regular Olympics and the Special Olympics, which again recognizes that you can have some amazing achievements based on genetic limitations and still not be the best in the world. Sports exist for a variety of purposes. Certainly at the highest levels, it's about competition and showcasing the limits of human physical achievement. But at the high school level it's also often about making friends, learning how to socialize, team behavior, and just plain physical fitness. Mountain meet molehill.

Do you expect the president, a man in a position that panders to the politically correct for its own benefit, would say otherwise?

And of course they have that right. They shouldn't be excluded from doing what they want to do. The only problem comes in if the sport's rules change, or if the game is impacted in some way. Obviously people with disabilities tend to play in special leagues, which is totally fine. If they're capable of playing in other leagues though, then why not?

I saw a news story before a playoff game about a kid who lose a leg due to a nasty knee injury during a high school football game. Rehabed all the way back and threw for a touchdown pass in limited play. No one is saying they should be picked over anyone, but if they can perform at a level high enough to make the team, there's no harm in letting them try out.

What a coincidence. They are covering this on the local news now. All this is about is making sure there are programs for disabled people. What's the issue?

As long as they don't hinder the game useless I'm all for it. Example. If some kid in a wheel chair wants to do wrestling, and I'm his opponent what am I suppose to do?

Yeah, basic common sense. Lai's post above is an example of someone arguing with an Obama that doesn't exist. Obama made a reasonable sort of statement that high school sports are a part of the social experience of high school and finding a way for disabled individuals to take part isn't a bad thing and is presenting it like Obama is advocating the end of athletic competition.

[insert Laihendi's ignorant derisive comments which are laughable, mostly likely dervied from overexposure to right-wing media and inadequate exposure to critical thinking]

The idiot that is the TC confuses equality of access with equality of outcome.

Not surprisingly TC's threads always have the common denominator of idiocy.

I don't see anything wrong if they have separate programs. If not, then I have a problem with it. Why should a disabled kid get to make the team when someone who was born unathletic not be able to make it? How are they different in respects that they both don't have the necessary athletic abilities/skills to be competative?

Well, no. I mean, if they want their own separate style of a sport (special Olympics, wheelchair basketball, etc.) then sure. However I don't think we should bring down normal sports for people who are obviously not suited to play in them.

I like that they are accomodating disabled people more and more and this is brilliant that they are creating more opportunities for team work and sports for them. I mean sports is fun as hell not just a professional business. At university there were two disabled guys in my first year, they had helpers to make sure note were taken and classes were attended, what I didn't know was that they had been through the same year of university FIVE TIMES in a row and never managed to pass and I think there's a time to draw the line and just get them the hell out, that was essentially eight places on that course taken up by two guys who shouldn't have been there., the first year fine, gotta evaluate them to start with so instead of ten its eight places. Moral of the story: Don't try to treat them as equals just because you don't want to upset anyone.

The article in the op specifically mentions how one of Obama's special advisers was partially blind during high school so the school made it so that everyone wrestling had to touch each other at all times so that he would not be disadvantaged. If this man gets what he wants then there will just be more changes like that that effect everyone. Sports will be remade in attempt to remove any competitive advantages or disadvantages that anyone in a given group might have.

The reality is that there are simply not enough physically handicapped people who are interested in athletics to create teams for traditional sports for the disabled in most places. That means that if they are going to participate in traditional sports they must be on the same team as the nondisabled. We should end public education and all of these kinds of programs and let people organize on their own and form their own sports teams and make them however they want. The government shouldn't be controlling how children engage in sports.

Education and recreation should not receive federal funding anyways so the fact that Title IX is even relevant is a problem.
