If Fox can bleed a comic book franchise dry by making multiple X-Men films, why shouldn't Sony get into the act?

According to the Hollywood Reporter, because they want to emulate the success that Warner Bros. had with Heath Ledger's performance with The Dark Knight, Sony is greenlighting a spinoff film based on Venon, one of the many villians in the Spider-Man Universe.

Don't expect to see Topher Grace (That '70's Show) back in the role anytime soon. Sony feels that he doesn't have enough star power to headline a film, so expect another pretty-boy, overexposed flavor-of-the-month actor to helm the part. No one from either Marvel or Sony's camp has made any comments as of yet.

I don't know if this is a good idea or not. The reason that Iron Man, The Dark Knight and The Incredible Hulk were successful is because they had good writers, talented actors, directors with a vision, and good marketing campaigns. With the exception of marketing, I don't see Sony extending the same effort for this movie.

Unless they plan on arranging it so that there'a a freak accident on set, killing 90% of the cast, the crew and that fat guy that does the on-set catering. It'll 1-up Ledger's death, and imagine the free publicity to boot. Here's the article.

Hey, if Sony thinks they can pull it off, more power to them. It's not like they have much more of a chance of ruining the film and Venoms name, then they have of making a good film.

Imagine, a great film starring Venom. It could work.

I was disgusted at the idea for a minute, then I came to a realisation of how well developed the symbiotes are in the Spiderman comics, if they include Carnage and other symbiotes, I could see it working well.

Oh god. You know you're in trouble when, to make more money, you make a movie about a villain who dies of cancer. Unless, of course, they follow the Mac Gargan-Venom afterwards, but still; bad idea.

Why does the article imply that Sony hasn't already bled Spider-Man dry?

Because they still have some blood left in that stone with Spider-Man 4 left to produce. It'll no doubt make some decent bank, despite the quality.

Venom is a cool character. They milk cool characters for lots of $$$. If they could they would make a Joker spin off film for sure.

Is it the same continuity of the Spider-man films? That means.....
he survived?
I still don't see how they can make a good movie out of this. So what if Venom is popular....having him alone doesn't seem quite interesting. Unless they have other marvel characters like Gambit in the Upcoming Woverine film.

They're currently seeking writers, so I doubt it'll have any continuity with the third film. But, who knows. As far as the Wolverine film is concerned, having multiple characters in a film doesn't necessarily make it enjoyable. Just take a look at X-Men: The Last Stand for proof. But it's still early to say.

Good point.

I guess it was all the people at Comic-Con who made Woverine so exciting.....darn their applause and screaming! :x

I think Spider-Man 3 set the record for biggest 2nd week dropoff in ticket sales. People might be wary of shelling out the money for this one.

I think it's a given that it won't make as much as three, but it'll still wind up somewhat profitable. The money they paid Marvel for the rights, they'll find a way.

If they don't **** it up and make him like he was in Spiderman 3, this could be pretty good.

For their sake I hope they realize it won't make as much, and adjust the budget accordingly.

There is a total of 6 Spider-Man movies planned http://www.moviesonline.ca/movienews_11795.html

Then we asked him about the upcoming Spiderman 4,5 and 6 and whether there was any truth to it."Yes Sony is making 4 5 and 6"

Thats why Disney makes more money than Sony film wise. Spinoffs for the loss.
