And yes UK has one of the rare policeforces where a majority is not carying guns. but even they had to open fire 18 times in 2012 and who doesn't know about the Mark Duggan case

Because its not that hard to find the exact same thing as this Hunt case in almost every single european city because the fact is that as long as we have human beings as cops, we will have judgments that for a layman might seem wrong. Like this not to mention that the only reason this ever became more than just a number in a statistic is for the reason why some people are claiming he got shot, and thats the colour of his skin.
Sorry europeans are not like americans. Cops aren't that trigger happy over here because guns are not easy to come by. The chances that someone has a gun is considerably lower than in the usa, so cops don't feel threatened that easily.
People don't go out breaking the law like in the usa too, because some things are simply not forbidden. They don't have to steal because there's social security.
And last but not least people that did break the law won't go as far to avoid being caught because the punishments are not as severe.
There are certainly similar cases in europe, but the percentage of people being shot by cops is a lot lower.
I'd have to say that carrying it in public without at the very least bubblewrap around it isn't a clever thing to do, and while fake and blunt it's not easy to see that at a distance so I'd understand that Police were called in and that they behaved as if it was real. That said If he came at them with it then I'd agree it's self defense, if they on the other hand showed up and he started running which promted them to shoot him in the back then I'd say they clearly jumped the gun.

I don't know what went through his mind. If someone feels that there life is in peril (for instance if they saw someone with a sword), then they would take measures to defend themselves.
