For some time I've had this itch for a truly mature experience that really demands to be scratched. But first, here's my definition of "mature", since it's a really subjective matter:

- deep and thought-provoking,

- serious,

- not afraid to break taboos, or take up themes people don't often talk about,

- morally gray; not showing people as one-dimensional and either fully good or fully evil, but rather as a mix of personality traits they truly are

Please recommend some movies fitting this definition. I don't mind dark atmosphere, gore, violence, "shocking" moments, and breaking taboos.

Preferred genres: dramas and thrillers.

Also, I don't mind long movies, but please avoid anything longer than 3.5h.

EDIT: Also, please avoid titles with cliched themes like a plague. I want originality.

Sounds interesting. Should I watch the Korean original or the American remake?

You should probably avoid the mainstream titles cause there's a large chance I've already seen them.

I tried watching it some time ago. It was too surreal for me to handle.

Yes, I've seen it. I'm a big fan of Tarantino's creations. Django, unfortunately, didn't turn out to be as good as I expected, especially compared to his earlier stuff.

Why do you insist on trolling? It's a serious request and you're really not helping by trying too hard to be funny.

The Room ends with Johnny shooting himself in the head, it doesn't get any more mature and serious than that does it?

I think Interstellar is quite mature. I haven't this kind of mature presentation for a long time. No, in your face explanations. Deeper acting. Less fake walls. It feels closer to 90s where movies are actually look realistic and actors respond to objects more realistically. There are so many little details that describe the world. No kiddie action. I like it a lot.

Sounds pretty good. I'd have to wait for it to come out on DVD or Blu-Ray in order to watch it, though.

Blade Runner and The Normal Heart sound kinda meh. The other two, however, are exactly the thing I'm looking for. Thanks.

I've seen El Orfanato. It was kinda good, but nothing spectacular. I'm gonna watch Capote for sure, though, since the premise sounds pretty interesting. As for Zodiac - it appears kinda cliche. Maybe I'll give it a go, we'll see.

I've already seen There Will Be Blood. It was awful.

As for A Serious Man, it might be something just for me. I love dark humor.

Apocalypse Now

Raging Bull

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (Yes it's animated but imo it's the best Batman film that treats the audience more maturely than most Batman films)

The Grand Budapest Hotel

That's all I can think of at the moment.

A little too early.....but both should be watched, seem to be up your alley. Nightcrawler is the best movie I saw this year, and it was a good year for movies.

Both movies are Thrillers with twists, and both are certainly for mature audiences.

I was going to suggest the completely uncensored release of Bernado Bertolucci's Novecento (1976), but I guess its 317-minute running time puts it out of contention. :-/
