Hey Guys,
I was searching through the internet looking at the OS, Linux. I have a spare computer that I would like to try this OS on but I do not have an idea how to:

Get it/ Download it
Which "Distributor" to use (I hear that Red Hat Linux is the best?)
How to Install it (If i install it normal like the Windows OS or something different)
How to get and which are the best Open source application to use
and
Is it seriously better that Windows?

I have been to the Red Hat website but that website says that I need to pay over $300 just to get a year subscription, I thought this was supposed to be an open source and free OS. So if anyone can help me find the best type of linux I would grealty appreciate it, thanks!.

Oh by the way I would use the version of linux to do the following things:

Editing Pictures and creating animations
Editing and compling Movies
Searching the internet (Mozilla)
Playing PC Games
and creating text documents

Thanks!!!

(P.S. I did not know where to put this post so if it is in the wrong place, I apologise.)

There's quite a selection. See distrowatch.com for a list of all of the popular distributions.

You should probably go with Ubuntu (installing software is easy, great installer) or OpenSuse (comes with XGL, a 3D interface...but the package management isn't quite as nice), both are free and downloadable from their websites.

That looks pretty sweet. Can I have Windows and Linux installed on the same PC? And how do I do that?

Yes. You need to shrink your windows partition... maybe leave about 8 gigs for linux. Suse will even set you up automatically if it sees windows on your hard drive... I'm pretty sure ubuntu lets you shrink the windows partition from the installer as well.

yeah, install linux, then windows. grub bootloader should prompt you which os to load. or you could shrink the ntfs partition and install linux on the freed space if you dont feel like reinstalling windows.

i hope linux works out for you. i used to have ubuntu when my windows install got messed up. linux was such a pain in the ass for me. it was almost too custom. the terminal is my worst enemy. keep windows until you figure everything out about linux. its not fun as a primary OS.
