Much less about the story and more so about the comments on the story. Now here on OT an argument often arises that people who call out and essentially tear down those who view homosexuality as something 'wrong' are more intolerant then anyone else. The issue being that it is often the ones who are doing the calling out that are vocal and ridicule people to the point of turning people into only their beliefs on the subject and not as actual persons. Often here the response to such claims is that people are fine with being intolerant to intolerance .

So what say you OT?

Duck Dynasty guy can say whatever the hell he wants and whatever push back he gets he deserves. And that is that.

Attacking people for an innate trait (ethnicity, sexuality, etc.) is a different animal altogether than calling someone out for doing so.

However, if you're going to have a reality show with real people, then you'd best be prepared to put up with their bullshit. That's reality.

I hope this means the end of Duck Dynasty crap everywhere. I mean, Jesus Christ, fucking Disney didn't milk their franchises like these people.

Who are they anyway? Based on posters I've seen, they look like swamp-dwelling rednecks. This recent business doesn't do much to convince me otherwise.

I completely disagree with what he said, however, I believe he has the right to say whatever he wants, as long as he's ready to deal with the push back.

@Makhaidos: The Robertson's own a retail company that sells duck calls. Someone decided it was a good idea to make a reality tv show about them.

i guess that with a different example i could see the point that people could potentially get overzealous with their defense of gays or whatever other group, but this isn't an example to highlight that. the author's self-proclaimed "intolerance of intolerance" was very reasonable here. maybe she got nasty later on in the comments, but i read the article and the first few pages of comments and she is pretty careful to say things like "troubling thoughts" and continually reference the quote rather than the person. she isn't calling the duck dynasty guy a terrible person. she's saying that those particular statements are hateful. he could love his family, treat his friends well, give a bunch of money to charity, and still do a lot of other very positive things while still making a hateful statement (that he is showing no remorse for...).

to make an extremely big jump in examples, look at gandhi. he was obviously a great man and inspirational in a lot of very positive ways, but he still said some really racist sh*t. you can still separate all the positive things he did while not condoning the other stuff because people are complex.

What the ****. I have a somewhat interesting job; somebody, feel free to pay me hundreds of millions of dollars to watch me work all day. Seriously, I'll do whatever you want.

Case management, mostly child welfare (though I despise children, if you're in social work at all, you'll be doing child welfare), with part-time work at the local zoo. I'm thinking about graduate school, but that's still a long ways off regardless.

I would instantly quit both and go be the official ass-wiper of Larry the Cable Guy for a nine-figure salary, though.

@Makhaidos: Your job could easily be made into a reality show. My wife is interested in child advocacy. I hate children as well.

I don't know about wiping Larry's ass though.

@plageus900: Much as I like to dream, there's no way in hell my job could ever be a reality show due to ethical issues. Broadcasting people's problems, residences, and overall treatment of their children on live TV *may* constitute a slight breach of confidentiality.

@Makhaidos: Imagine the lawsuits. Though you must admit the associated drama would make it a smash hit with a lot of our population :P

Yeah, but how many of those shows involve children and DCF?

More importantly, is it true that Larry the Cable Guy's grandma once stole one of the Robertson's duck calls?

Oh and Makhaidos, what's wrong with "swamp-dwelling rednecks"? What does it matter if they dwell in a swamp or if they live in some overrated big city.

@whipassmt: He didn't say anything was wrong with 'swamp-dwelling rednecks'. He was simply asking who they were.

How can you have a show about rednecks for rednecks and not expect such things to be said?

We as Americans have the amazing ability to avoid listening to things that offend us. What irritates me is when groups feel they need to take away the right for anyone to listen either. I disagree with Phil Robertson's views, so I don't watch his show. I think Alec Baldwin is a short-tempered jerk, so I don't watch his show. Isn't it amazing how easy it is to avoid things you don't like?
