When lawyers or public defenders are appointed to people who are obviously guilty just not proven in court, what is their job?

Yeah, I remember the lawyer defending joseph fritzl said that he believed fritzl was mentally ill and wanted to argue for a sentence to reflect that, as opposed to sentencing him for just being a bad man. Some lawyers just campaign for various causes like thatI think it's generally to make arguments in attempt to lessen the sentence.

Even if the person really did murder a whole group of people? Why put someone through the pain of having to defend a murderer?
cuz the pain goes away when they see that fat paycheck in the mail

That is the profession they have chosen. Anyone who enters the profession of defense attorney knows that sometimes they're going to be defending a guilty person. Most are fine with this as they believe that everyone, no matter what, deserves an advocate on their behalf. That doesn't necessarily mean they're trying to get a guilty man off the hook and free, but may mean seeing that the guy doesn't end up with a needle in the arm.
