Disney expects a $200 million loss on this movie...

...which is more than $50 million higher than that of Cutthroat Island.

Other movies lost more as a percentage of their budget, but in absolute terms - John Carter is the ultimate bomb.

I'm sort of proud I saw it at the cinema:lol:

Last year it was Mars Needs Mom and now it's John Carter. Disney is on a roll.

Well so far John Carter has made $179,327,248 at the box office worldwide so it's actually creeping closer and closer to pulling even if the overseas ticket sales continue to go strong and that of course doesn't even count any licensing deals they make money from nor any future rental or DVD sales which eventually will put some low cost fast money into the total coin coffer. So all things considering even despite the insane budget of $250,000,000 the film doesn't seem to really that much of a bomb...just an underperformer in the States much like the Tin Tin film.

All I know is that the main character in the story's name is too similar to the main character in the Terminator movies. I first heard the commercials and was psyched for a new Terminator movie that I didn't know about. Then I see that it's another cgi filled movie with environmental themes and became depressed.

Get some people more able to evaluate a movie's potential performance before sinking what seems like a good $250M+ into an unproven IP (in the medium). It isn't rocket science Disney.

You know, I thought the movie would suck super hard, but suprisingly, I have heard nothing except praise for John Carter. Too bad it couldn't bring in any customers. Kind of sad people went to go watch 21 Jump Street and Project X instead of a science fiction movie adaption of a classic.

Sadly the only thing keeping Disney from bankruptcy is Pixar. They have fallen and hard.

Pirate700

Disney films from 2011:

Mars Needs Moms - Budget: $150,000,000 Box Office: $21,392,798

Pirates of the Carribbean:On Stranger Tides - Budget: $250,000,000 Box Office: $1,043,871,802

Winnie the Pooh - Budget: $30,000,000 Box Office: $33,152,846

The Muppets - Budget: $45,000,000 Box Office: $158,365,048

And of course this doesn't count money from product licences, rental and DVD purchases and such so all things considered they didn't do so bad even if you don't count the Pixar film Cars 2 which came out that year.

According to boxofficemojo, John Carter has made $180 million worldwide so far and might just break the $200 million mark before it stops showing. It will bring in $30 million in dvd sales and TV rights would get it close to cost. John Stanton wont be doing live action anymore and Disney might actually learn from this failure by picking a better person for the job.

They still have Marvel to fall back on. With the release of The Avengers coming up--just from merchandising alone--it'll help cushion the blow.

Disney picked a guy who had no live action experience. They should have gone with Gore Verbinski as director. http://www.vulture.com/2012/03/john-carter-doomed-by-first-trailer.html this long read might help explain why it didnt do so well.

To be fair, % is a much better indicator b/c of inflation. The movie does not look that bad either (to be ranked up with biggest bombs of all time...considering the competition)

Agreed. The actual "Disney" name though is almost worthless today outside of the theme parks.

By all accounts it's certainly not the best movie ever made, but the real issue is how poorly Disney marketed the movie. Instead of playing up how influential the books were, or how Stanton is a two-time Academy Award winner, or how it's 132 minutes of Tim Riggins fighting aliens, they slapped a vague title on it (apparently it was originally called "John Carter of Mars", but some empty suit got it in his head that because Mars Needs Moms bombed, the word "Mars" must be box-office poison) and made it look like the worst of the Star Wars prequels combined with the worst of Avatar in commercials.

IM2 dropped like a rock after the opening weekend. It earned 40 million more than the first movie, but the budget was 50 million dollars higher and it had a bigger marketing push. Also it was terrible. Disney should be careful with that brand.

I really have no sympathy. If you can't (or won't) make quality films like you used to, then why should I spend my money to go see them? I haven't seen a decent Disney film in theatres that wasn't made by Pixar in a looooong time. With all the resources that Disney has at it's discretion, there really is no reason that they cannot make quality films anymore.

The Disney channel is a good representation of this. They REALLY don't care about their channel or it's audience so long as they're making money.

They acquired Pixar and it's the smartest decision they've ever made. I shudder to think what's going to happen if or when Pixar leaves Disney.

Aside from Cars, I have a monumental amount of respect for Pixar. I can't wait to see them finally break off of Disney's leash and start doing whatever they want. I wonder what they'll make without the family-centered focus that Disney forces them to utilize...

By the way, I did see John Carter in the theaters and it was actually entertaining. I dont think it did well because there wasnt enough interest for people to go see it. Everyone I talk to would ask who is John Carter or would mistaken it as John Conner.

Isn't Pixars mission statement to create Films for Everyone? It's for that reason that I never pictured them getting out of the family friendly focus. Really, I'm not sure if it would be in their best interest to do so.

From what I've heard it is doing a lot better overseas... As for the biggest box office bomb, I have to say Delgo takes the cake since it grossed about $915,840 out of its $40,000,000 budget. Bear in mind that it was barely advertised and was shown in over 2,000 theaters

Well the movie sucked. Disney needs to stay close to their cartoon roots. Winnie the Pooh had shown that Disney can still do animated films.

Quite a few of those movies on that least deserve to be on there. Speaking of which, how are Brendan Frazer or Eddie Murphy still getting work? It seems like almost everything they've done since the 90's automatically goes on the list.

It's pretty bad when you peaked 20 years ago, and by peaking you really mean participated in a couple movies that didn't almost bankrupt a film company. Eddie's next movie doesn't look like it's going to do anything for his career. I'm guessing when the studio sat down with the script they said something on the lines of "We need someone that'll do anything".
