Every once in a while, a "who is the highest GameSpot user?" thread pops up on OT, and with it, lots of replies such as "zomg someone's lvl 63 ZOMG i can't believe he must have no life or he's a drone testing the level system or something like that ZOMG". From this to an entire crowd of people who worship KingFrizzy just because of his level was only one step. Which isn't so surprising since many people are judging nowadays only by stats...
The truth about KingFrizzy? He's a normal guy, who was at some point (2003-2005) a very addicted GameSpotter. I remember he had like 45k posts, all until he asked the admins to reset his post count just to see how many posts he was making after he became less active. After he get rid of his forum addiction, he got other two addictions - the level addiction and the blog addiction. That's the period of time when he got such a high level - many of the other users, not being mods, were banned because of abusing the level system - and he used that advantage to get at the top of the community. There were other guys trying to top him, but many of them failed. What happened afterwards? Albeit still being a very active browser of the site, KingFrizzy has become another GS veteran on the verge of leaving the site due to not being able to enjoy posting on the forums. Yes, there are many noobs on the site, yes, there are many trolls and there are very little good threads, but why not trying to accomodate a bit with the new kids on the block? After all, KF can easily switch between intelligent, meaningful posts that can not be read in less than 5 minutes and SW-type posts like "The sheep have been owned."
But no, no. KF barely makes the effort of trying to adapt, because adaptation to changes is how you survive for more than 5-6 years on a site. I agree that the golden age is gone, but that doesn't mean it can't be brought back. Even if his prestige is only due to it's level, he could still have done something about this situation. For eg., a forum to reunite if not all the old-school forumites, then at least a part of it. But since KF does have a life, maybe he doesn't want to lose it again...
P.S. The_Prophetjs once used to say "KingFrizzy owns everybody". Probably most of us, but for sure KingFrizzy hasn't managed to own me yet.
