It really does not matter. Some of the highest level users I have seen have under 5000 posts,and I have seen people with a lot lower levels who have only been here a year a two with twice as many posts as me. So it really does not mean much.

its something for fun, and more people sick around that way What fun is there in watching a progress bar slowly go from 0% to 100% and see a number rise by one. It should be able to go down with inactivity, the same way it goes up by using the site. Too long without showing up and BAM!, back to level 1. Maybe not so severe, but you get the idea. Now that would be an incentive to be around.

Now that would be an incentive to be around. To be honest, I'd rather skip the post count. It seems to confuse newbies into thinking that quantity > quality
Remove both level and post count then. We don't need random numbers to tell if a user types quality posts. That notion should be taken from the posts themselves. With levels and post counts we risk having annoying users that just post everywhere, even if their contribution is close to zero, in order to advance faster and then demanding "e-respect" because they have a high level or post count.
