LUCKNOW, India — India sent hundreds of thousands of troops into the streets Thursday as it braced for a potential eruption of violence ahead of a court decision on whether Hindus or Muslims should control a disputed holy site.

Hoping to prevent a new round of violence when the court issues its verdict Thursday afternoon in the 60-year-old case over who rightfully controls the site, the government flooded the streets with troops.

The 16th-century Babri Mosque in Ayodhya was razed by Hindu hard-liners in 1992, setting off nationwide riots that killed 2,000 people. Hindus say the mosque, built in 1528 by the Mughal emperor Babur, was erected at the birthplace of their god, Rama.

Hindus want to build a temple to Rama there, while Muslims want to rebuild the mosque.

Religion is seen as serious business... it's not a matter of just faith and hoping to believe that something is real, but the hard truth that it is real, that they pray and go about their daily lives and do what it is to do because they know that is the right way.

Tolerance isn't exactly taught when said teachings detail the fact that if someone isn't doing what you're doing, they're obviously wrong and as such are fundamentally flawed for society...

Anyway it sucks, there probably will always be issues and fighting and a small amount of hatred.

Why not divide the land in half and let both groups build their temples? I don't think Rama and Allah would care much.

The land is to be divided into thirds (another third to a Hindu minority group), though I doubt it'll do little to stop any backlash between the two sides.
