No, this isn't a choice I have to make, so don't ask. And I'm pretty sure the question is straightforward enough to the point at which I don't have to explain it.

I'll probably get ripped apart for this, but I think I would want the child aborted. I would not want to live in such a situation, and so what right would I have to do that to another human being? Well, at least try to understand my POV before you flame the Hell outta me.

Anyway, let's see what everyone thinks...

I would still love him or her the same. Being born with a mental or physical handicap does not matter. However, if we found out early on in the pregnancy that the child would be born with a possible terminal handicap, I might talk to my spouse about abortion, rather than going through with the pregnancy.

Now I would say to abort it, but if that ever happens to me, it would be harder to think from a logical pov, so I don't know what I would say.

I don't know... cause my bro came out a bit mentally challenged and... it's a bit of a pain.  I mean, he's a good brother and stuff, but he's slow.  He suffers a bit too.

I'm going with abort. *puts up a flame shield*

The sad thing is, you mention how it would effect your life and and not the child's. I believe every child has a right to at least experience life for himself and it should not be up for discussion by someone else.

are they 100% sure,

because my mom told me thats exactly what they said about me because I was having lack of oxygen but as far as I know Im ok,  but It could be due to the fact that I was born in a third world country, so maybe the medics didnt have the best equipment.

Well since I don't see the sense in killing something that can't help it, I'd raise it or give it up.  Most likely I'd raise it though.

Nothing is 100% sure and just because the baby is challenged doesnt mean anything. They might be the smartest person in the world. Who am I to play God? I would raise it and love it.

Abort! It's going to be hard for them so I thnk, if its possible, to just abort while the baby still doesn't have thought.

I don't see why a mentally handicapped kid would be valued any less as a life.

Yeah it would be hard, but we shouldn't make that decision.

You mean mentally retarded?  I wouldn't abort.  Aslong as they wouldn't grow up in pain, then I wouldn't abort.

i would love the child regardless, you can't just give up and give the baby away for adoption, or an abortion, thats just wrong.

Umm...what? I said I wouldn't want to live like that, cause it would be miserable, so I feel the child would be miserable. How that fails to effect the child's life is beyond me.

My wife and myself actually had this discussion the other day, since we are trying to have a child.  We are still way up in the air on the subject. Could we handle it, probably not. Would we change our minds once the time came, possibly. We know the child wouldn't live a normal life, but are undecided if we would end it pre-maturely.

I'd love to have a mentally disturbed kid... Who doesn't want to have a little Tony Montanna? But if the child was mentally handicapted, I'd probally want to abort the pregnancy. *runs away for flame-attacks*

I wouldnt care if my kid was a little slow, I'd just teach em to take names and kickass to whoever gave em trouble, and if s/he gets in trouble, SO WHAT, they have a alibi.

Mentally challenged kids at my school get picked on behind their backs all the time; it's pretty mean. I don't think I want to put them through all that humiliation and pain they'll have their whole life.

You guys disgust me.  You think you can just choose who lives and who dies based on the kind of life you think they're going to live?  You have no idea how handicapped they will be until they are born.  Furthermore, mentally handicapped people can live perfectly productive lives.  I'm sure many of them would love to tell you how happy they are that they weren't aborted.

I would suck it up and deal with it. He/she would still be my child and I would still love he/she. Anyone who is willing to adopt or abort the kid, does not deserve he/she in the first place.

Guess what, man? Even you are made of behind your back, it's inevitable! You don't choose not to give something life, period! Especially for a reason like that.

Sell them to the circus. Maybe the kid can do a funny dance or walk on its hands for food scraps. At least I could turn a buck from the deal.

Firstly, I don't know what I would do, because it's a very difficult situation, and I might feel totally differently if it did actually happen.

I think to a certain extent it depends what the handicap is. I mean, my younger brother has Aspergers Syndrome, and he manages to live a perfectly happy life. In fact, a lot of the time it seems like his life is better than a "normal" person's.

But if it was something really, really serious I might contemplate abortion, if I genuinely didn't think I'd be capable of giving the child a happy life.

I don't know, it's a horrible decision to make. I just hope I never have to make it.
