Simply because people are too stupid. If say junk food were to be banned, MANY people would hate for all those candy bar companies to close their doors, such as Hersheys or something. Politicians simply don't want to hear all the protests.

A minor, by themself, cannot buy cigarettes or use tannings beds, where I live anyway.
hey while we're at it lets ban all physical sports! you know, because theres a chance you could get injured. and hey, why not illegalise motorised transport - its a big killer. hell, if you want to ban junk food because it can cause obesity how about banning tv's and the internet, surely without these obesity would be far less common. *sigh*

yea but sports have possible positive long term effects, there is no upside to tanning beds or smoking.
That made me chuckle. We can't put a ban on the food we eat; just boycott it. I think that's why McDonald's took the initiative by taking off the 'Super Size' from their menu after that guy made a documentary of eating just Super Sized meals for a month. Tanning beds should be illegal. If you get trapped in there, you'll die. It sucks to be in an age we're kids are taught that looks matter more than they should. It could be worse.
I could care less what people do. The fact that a majority of "non-healthy" things are illegal only pushes the fact that its "risque" or cool. Nothing harmful towards ones own health should be illegal imo. If they are dumb enough to do it let them reap the consequences while we benefit off them (monetary wise through excise taxes).

Exactly. It's illegal to give or sell cigarrettes to minors and for minors to buy them, but once a minor has a cigarrette, no one has the authority to stop him from smoking it.
in the UK we have pictures of dead people and ruined lungs on our tobacco products as a warning to what can happen as well as messages like 'Smoking Kills' or 'Smoking is addictive don't start'
i think the same should happen for junk food, why doesn't a KFC bucket of chicken have a picture of a fatty in fat mans cloths mopping his fat sweaty brow on the front warning that this food will lead to you looking like this. it could have warnings like 'say goodbye to your penis'

I've said it a million times, what a person does to/with their body is their own business. not yours, not mine, and not Uncle Sams. Their business should be to make sure the risks are known (which they do to varying degrees of success), so the people can make an informed decision.

Junk food is bad for you in large quantities or in lieu of a healthier diet, but some does not cause awful effects. Tanning can be safe when done with the proper prevention.

Anyway, at least junk food provides something. While those things are in excess (and other parts in amounts too small), it is still stuff your body can use. Meanwhile, cigarettes are flat-out poisonous. There is no benefit to them whatsoever.
Never used a tanning bed; don't care for them. Altough again, they provide something; a quick tan.

im not sure a bucket of fried chicken is ever good for you A bucket may not be, but a piece can be ok in moderation. Chicken has protein, iron, and carbs that your body does use.
