Hey OT here's the deal, my friend's birthday is comign up and I was planning on giving him a book . But I need a good one you know one that has a good story or one that gets you hooked from the start. I always see book reader threads in this forum so I decided hey why not ask for their help so...

Anyone has some book recommendations? :? A small description of what is it about helps me a lot

Thanks

The Book of Five Rings. I've framed my life around it's principles.

On a more serious note. Here's a fascinating specimen.

Though...he might absolutely hate it.

I'd describe it, but that's...hard in this case.

It has it's qualities.

It's very slow at times though, and very long too. Almost 1000 pages I think.

Liked A Moment in the Sun by John Sayles. Also The Amazing Adventures of Kaviler and Clay by Micheal Chabon.

Does it have to be fiction? 'cause there are some non-fiction books that I felt had good stories.

Angels and Demons: The plot follows Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, as he tries to stop the Illuminati, a legendary secret society, from destroying Vatican City with the newly discovered power of antimatter.

I Am Legend: The plot follows Robert Neville who is a survivor of the apocalypse that turned all humans into blood-thirsty vampire-like creatures.

Making the Corp (non-fiction): Thomas E. Ricks follows Platoon 3086 of the Marine Corp as they embark on a quest to shed their civilian ways to becoming Marines. I'd recommend this if your friend is a military buff or if he wants to join the Marine Corp. Very motivational.

Maus (Graphic novel and also non-fiction): It's a story about the Holocaust as lived through by the author's father. Instead of the characters being human, each race (Jews, Germans, Poles, and Americans) are portrayed as animals (Mice, Cats, Pigs, and dogs, respectively).

That's all I can think of at the moment. btw, the books "Angels and Demons" and "I Am Legend" AREN'T based on the movies. It's the other way around and I felt that the books were better than the movies.

That's a pretty difficult book for someone who is not familiar with Murakami. After Dark or Norwegian Wood would be more suitable.

You surprise me Aljosa. I wouldn't have thought you were cultured enough to know any of those names.

[QUOTE="leviathan91"] No it doesn't have to be fiction but I don't know if he might like a book that already got a movie, don't get me wrong I read the lord of the rings after watching the movie but he.....is a weird dude

It's a different way of presenting a thick book.

You'd think they'd be able to keep their poor taste to themselves, but oh no, they have to flaunt it and silence critics.

I wonder how long the politeness to at least attempt the book would last before anger sets in and it gets indefinitely shelved.
