I feel awkward around my overweight g@y friend.

I find it hard to relax when we hang out or go to a movie or something. Anytime there is a fat or gay joke i get really uncomfortable because I'm not sure how much it offends them. I try to make sure not to laugh either.

I find the material funny sometimes and just take it as a light hearted joke and I kind of feel bad for them at the same time. If you fit one or both of these do things like this bother you? How much?

If you were out with a friend and they laughed at a gay or fat joke would the fact that they laughed bother you?

I have a black friend I am uncomfortable around as well. We watched Blazzing Saddles a while back and i felt uncomfortable the whole time even though i had been laughing at that movie for like 20 years already.

I'm a 24 year old straight white male.

I think you should stop lying to your friend. I hate people that "pretend" to be offended.

I have plenty of White friends and we make offensive jokes about each other's race, but they're my friends, I know them well and in that context we don't offend each over because we know neither of us are racists. It seems to me, TC that this person is not really your friend since you're that uncomfortable.

If your friends is so up-tight and insecure in himself then don't hang out with him. Honestly, if one can't laugh at oneself every so often then one has self-image issues. Tell him to get over himself.

What are you watching that has so many jokes about fat people or black people?

Just doesn't seem like this situation should come up all that often.

1. Stereotype humor is rarely, truly funny. It is largely uninsightful, easy, and dumb humor. Jokes come from exaggerations, and every joke has an exaggeration; stereotype humor has its exaggerations built in and plays on the fact the listener is "in on it." Its purpose is to cement the lines in our society, not to cross or challenge them as truly good humor attempts to do. Your discomfort may just be you rubbing up against your societal programming, and you should consider that maybe its a good thing, and something many people are unwilling to face.

2. From his perspective, should he "get over himself?" I really doubt its a sign of healthy growth to let other people distance themselves from you or place you in a box so that they can more easily identify with you safely, without having to challenge themselves. That is not "overcoming your ego."

Part of having a good sense of humour is laughing at yourself. I think you need to hand around with different kinds of people more, or grow up. I just don't see what your issue is.
