Sonic Youth is a band from the 80's(but is still active today). Usually have a really layered, distorted sound.

I haven't seen them live for many years but my favorite part is when they would go off on experimenting with feedback and distortion with their guitars for around a half hour or so and their drummer would just get up and leave to take a mini-break.
