I was looking at GTA IV Complete and I must have accidently added it to my cart. I would like the game for sure, but my dad doesn't like GTA. I feel really guilty for not telling him! How should I tell him?

Why do you feel guilty? Would he make you give the game back? How old are you (that helps)?

Just tell your dad: "Hey dad, I ordered this game by mistake. I know you don't like it but I would like to keep it."

And let the chips fall where they may.

If I said I would like to keep it he will talk to me for an hour... I'm 11.

What about this: Dad, I need to tell you something. On Wednesday I was looking at games on steam and I accidently added GTA IV to my cart. I own it. I tried to get rid of it but I couldn't. I haven't played it. It was an accident and it won't happen again (chances are 95%). You can check every now and then to make sure I haven't played.

I think that's ok. Its the 99% truth (I did try to load up the game but its a pain in the ass). Anything I should add?

He may and that's the gamble you take. You can:

  • Keep it and not tell him, which according to you would make you feel guilty.
  • Tell and ask to keep it. He says no and talks to you for an hour.
  • Tell and ask to keep it. He says yes.
  • Tell and say you will return it as soon as possible.

There are others but those are the more obvious.

1/4 ain't that bad, I seen worse. It depends how guilty it would make you feel not telling him.

Tell him, he will probably make you take it back but you will feel good being honest plus there is a chance (albeit probably small) that he lets you keep it. And no matter what others jerks might tell you in this forum, there is no shame or uncoolness in doing the right thing.

You know in your heart what you should do.

Then don't buy it

You are not old enough to purchase it legally and your parent obviously does not want you to have it.

That sounds about right, I would add the bit about want it to play it but that's your choice.

It depends your calculations on how probable it is that he would let you play it.

If you know it is pretty much 0% then yeah, it might be better to not bring it up.

But if you think there is like a 25% I would roll the dice. If you roll the dice what you get? Hearing him for about an hour? Would he yell a lot? Only you know how bad it could get. But also think about the reward: what if he says yes? Ufff, then you get to enjoy GTA: IV The Complete Edition which I own too and know you would like it much.

Just be honest with yourself. Also a lot has to do with how you bring up the subject. Do you think he is a man you could reason with? "Hey dad, I understand what you wouldn't like for me to play a GTA game. The violence, guns etc. But lets be honest, I have seen that stuff already on movies and TV shows (have you?). But I think I'm mature enough to play it".

The thing is, the more that I think about it, I wouldn't let my 11 year old son/daughter play GTA either.

there is a 10-20% chance he will say yes... Maybe later this (next) year I could bring it up and have him play but for now I will stick to telling him.

@klonecc45: does your dad on occasion look at your steam library? if he does and you're afraid he's going to take your steam account away from you, i believe stream has a feature where it tracks the total time played on each game (can a pc gamer confirm this for me?) if so as long as gta4 stays at 0 day, 0 hour 0 minutes, 0 seconds played you should be good.

That's like saying, "I accidentally bought a porno, how should I tell my dad?"

The answer is that you DON'T tell your dad. You keep the porno, you shut the hell up and enjoy it, and you hope that your dad doesn't notice that you bought it.

I bought a copy of CoD: Advanced Warfare for an 11-year old, so I'm in no position to judge. :-P

Apparently, you missed the part in the terms of use saying you have to be 13 to use the site.
