How not to react when your child tells you he's gay.

Really sad shit. How could parents who raised their kid just throw him on the street at the drop of a hat? Fucked up shit. I understand many people, especially Americans with their Podunk right wing fringe Christian beliefs have their own views about how homosexuality is a sin. But come on. Their son is their son and they should love him regardless. There's something very wrong in raising someone to adulthood and just throw them out onto the street like they're disposable, like they never mattered. They've bought to much into this bigoted bullshit that homosexuality is a choice, and they stand by it at the expense of losing a son. Seems they really twisted his coming out event. Yes, coming out is a choice, it's the choice to tell people who they really are. But being gay, that's not a choice.

There's a lot of good response videos on this as well worth checking out in the related links.

It's good to see he's already gathered about $80,000 in donations in just one day, to help him get on his feet and start his new life without his family there to support him.

It sux, but, it is unfair to demand parents to love their children like this. And a smart kid would already anticipated this outcome and wait it out. And yes, I am gay and I know how it feels like. But, it is always better to wait it out to avoid unnecessary conflict. There are times I wanted to tell my parents I have a master. And everyone I have dated said the same thing, wait it out until I can be on my own. Because all of us gays have to considered the worst case scenario. So, no. I don't blame the parents. Unless there is depression issues. A gay should be patient and wait it out.

The kid seem to be looking for a confrontation, when the parents tell him to leave the guy picks a specific date which leads me to believe he had made plans already to leave and wanted to get the fight on video. To his credit he doesn't actually gets his family member's faces on camera so he didn't totally burned his folks.

So yeah, I'm just speculating but it is easier to lay things out there when you have a plan all along.

@lamprey263: what in the hell are you talking about?! thats exactly the way you react. you're right though. they should love him regardless, but they are justified. they react like this because they love their son, they know where he's gonna end up 100 years from now, and i'm not about to go into detail about said place because its a bit too graphic. the point is that this guy got exactly what he deserved. but hey, its his choice . if he wants to go to hell so badly, then who am i or anybody to deny him. btw, i've read some of the penalties for being gay online from people who had out of body experiences. trust me, the things they do in there are not pretty. but hey, i feel sorry for this kid, he doesn't know whats coming to him. man, poor bastard. i sitll cannot believe he called his mom a bitch. this guy.

No
What's unfair is treating your child like this due to a sexual preference he had no control over
You are bordering delusional

Don't waste time trying to talk about science to someone who says "You go by all the scientific stuff you want to, I'm going by the word of god." LOL Yeah, they're too far beyond rational thought processes at that point. These people clearly aren't fit to be parents in the first place. Someone ask this person if she supports slavery since the bible does. ;O)

Demand? No one should have to demand that parents love their kids unconditionally, That's just the way it should be... LOL If you don't then you shouldn't be having kids in the first place.

How all that is condoned in modern society is unacceptable. It is one thing to disagree with something, but it is something else entirely to attack someone because of that thing. We condemn Middle Easterners for the perpetration of religious beliefs in their culture and then act the same way behind closed doors. I am a religious person, but I will not attack someone because of it. That is an example of hypocrisy.

#33 Posted by lamprey263 (25615 posts) -

@watchdogsrules: Shut the fuck up you moron. I hope you're this stupid because your parents dropped you on your head when you were a child. You do not shame and shun and be abusive to your child for coming out gay. And I say this as having to be there while another friend and I got a call from one of our best friends who came out to his parents, and his parents reacted this same way. He was on the brink of suicide and it was one of the scariest and uncertain things I've ever had to endure. So yes, shut the fuck up, because you're not just voicing an opinion, you're encouraging a pattern of emotional abuse that can drive people to end their life. If there is a loving God and a Heaven, you most certainly not going there. You are part of a facet of society that has co-opted something sacred and misappropriated it to promote bigotry and hatred.

That kid brought this on himself. You don't just insult other people's belief by saying that I don't give a crap about the word of God and that a psychologist knows better (Btw psychology is a really subjective science. It's not math) . He didn't stop there though. He continued by saying that his parents did a shitty job in raising him and that giving him food or shelter isn't raising. FUCK THAT DUDE. Why does he think his parents gave him shelter and food? Why did they give birth to him? Did they hope that one day he is going to grow up and go to work and pay them for their food and shelter? No they raised him out of mercy and kindness. That's a lot more than any stranger would do for you. But I guess this is a subject that you people who lived with no worries but missing the bus in the morning don't understand. Were it my own son I would disinherit him damn him and forsake him forever until he apologizes.

While this wus is raising 80,000 dollars because someone punched him in the face people are being butchered by ISIS and boko haram. Massive collateral damage is acceptable because it's not happening to you, it's happening to some Arabs. Mass slaughters, starvation, sickness. The humanity is in it's most depraved state. When I heard hadith that the Messiah will come in a time when people are harsh and injustice has filled the face of this earth I laughed and said how can this hadith be true? How can God know that his servants are going to turn into such cruel beings and never do anything about it? But now I understand. God has already shown the right path. The signs are everywhere. No apology accepted. What should be done is known to everyone and no one acts upon it. But let some folks enjoy their gay activism, feminism, socialism, capitalism, separatism, atheism, etc. Let them feel good about themselves. Let them think they're bringing something new to the table. Something that hasn't been done before. Let them think they are a revolutionary race, these "modern" human beings. Let them claim to be what they're not: humans. Let them love the smell of their own farts.

@lamprey263: one, i DO NOT CARE if some one decides to kill themselves because of the're parents reaction to telling them that they are gay, thats their problem. two, so i'm not getting into heaven based on ONE comment i made on a website? because your basically saying that based on this comment it determines my whole life. three, did i say to be abusive to the kid or shun him, hmmmmmmmm, nope, i said that they should love him regardless, so maybe before you start becoming ignorant you read the whole story first sir. ;)

Oh so its okay for them to act like complete morons and insult his sexual orientation but you think idiotic religious beliefs are untouchable? No. I'd say he gave them the same amount of respect they gave him. Raised him out of mercy and kindness? Yeah, they just seemed to skip the UNCONDITIONAL LOVE part that most mentally healthy humans have for their children. LOL But these people are clearly not normal mentally healthy people. They're deranged religious psychopaths. The fact that they reacted with violence when they had their belief system challenged speaks volumes about them. You know, the funny thing is that I am an Atheist and these are the same kind of people who would say I am immoral and yet if I had a kid I would NEVER just abandon him or her because of who they are. Abandoning your offspring is what lower forms of animals will often do, which is what these people are to me. Actually, there are a lot of species that do not abandon their young as well so that also speaks volumes about these people as parents. They are a disgrace and should not even be allowed to have children.

Beliefs are often based on ignorance. In the case of these parents, their view of their son is based on a cherry-picked belief from a childish book and a complete lack of scientific knowledge.

They said they wanted him to leave. He said I will be gone by Thursday, the lady said okay, and he should of just stopped right then and there. If he is legal age then it is no longer what it was when he wasn't. Guy isn't anything wrong except that he forgot when to let go and move forward.

I mean when I hit 18, while it wasn't for coming out, was around a whole set of moral issues of what those who raised me and what I felt was right or wrong. I left and told only one goodbye. Of course had I had the same confrontation scenario as this guy I'd of ended up shot. Literally.

You as well are a sad pathetic person but unlike you I'm gonna give you some reasons why:

- First you accused me of hating gays without ever knowing me or pointing to any part of my post that tells you that I hate all gay people in the world and not just this one person.

- Second you claimed to know me by accusing me of being a gay hater not having read my previous posts on the matter which are quite pro-gay.

- Third you engaged in an argument with no intention of having a discussion other than to call me sad and pathetic.

- Fourth you came here seeking attention not conversation.

- Fifth you twisted my words. I said the man was responsible for the outrage. He should have respected his parents more and by doing so he could have avoided being beaten but you said that I meant his parents' actions are justified.

- Sixth I said giving that slacker money while kids are dying of starvation shows how vile humanity has become instead you said that I said gays don't have the right to pursue their rights.

- Seventh You definitely are a sad pathetic being. You insulted and tried to humiliate someone who is pro-gay or at least on his way to becoming pro-gay. But now thanks to your stupidity I made the generalization that all gays are like you. They seek attention, avoid any rational discussion and instead try to force people to have empathy for them.

- Eight I'm wrong about my seventh claim. All gays are NOT like you. Only thing is that you really are a sad pathetic person.

My parents always gave me food, even when there was little to be had, and I never lived on the street, even though it almost come to that at times for our family.

My parents also abused me physically and psychologically on a daily basis, they taught me to be racist and homophobic and I was told that I was never to make any sort of decisions; they would make them from me. I wasn't allowed to play with other children because I needed to cook, clean, wash and everything else and when everything was done I was to just go to my room and stay out of sight. They would often tell me I was an accident that they wish they didn't have but still had hopes I would die and free them from that burden...my father first told me this when I was 3 years old. I was not to make friends or talk to anyone other than greetings. When I was 14yo my mother told me that unless she was allowed to pick my career for me she would not pay for my studies and that "she would pick whatever got me graduated the soonest and made the most money so that I could give it to her". Every time I made a connection with someone she would do whatever she could to sever that connection so I would have to be entirely reliable on them; if she couldn't get me to stop the connection from my side, they would go to the person in question and do it from there.

But they gave me food and shelter. Was that raising, or was it just keeping me alive?
