I asked a couple questions to try it out. Based on how their system works, if you answer a question, you gain points. The answers i got were all either incorrect, random responses, or trolling. A very small percentage was actually helpful or knowledgeable.

It's a shame that the rest of the site is filled with "idiots".

Never used it (except when I'm searching for things and a yahoo answers link shows up in the search results). I think that for most stuff (or maybe everything) there is a better and preferable way to go than yahoo answers.

Never used it myself but it will always pop up whenever I google something. Maybe that goes to show how popular the service is I don't know. From the little I personally experienced of it in those searches it looks surprisingly decent. Of course as an open public social platform it is bound to have its share of trolls and internet bums but that shouldn't be used to automatically discredit it. One particular favorable aspect of the service that I observed is how it can provide quick answers to some questions of a technical nature or are simply alien to the individual for whatever reason in layman terms. That can come in handy at times.

I don't use it as much as I used to, but it's a good place to waste some time and answer questions, I'm up to 1,300 so far. There are a lot of idiots there that just provide troll answers, but it's still usually a good place to get quick information about something.

If you need an answer to something you get better you visiting a forum that specializes in what ever your issue is.

Example my car has a problem, my car is a Ford so I go to Ford owners forum to ask question

^ yep. in return,Yahoo answers has the advantage of being frequented by a lot of users while it takes some time to get your answers from specific forums . meaning; YA is good only for quick simple questions.

Never used it and would never use it.

If i had to get a question answered about something i would either research it or find a person within that field and ask there.

But i am not surprised that its a bunch of crap :) most things on the interwebs are where its open to random people, after all just look at OT and SW or NeoGaf.

Yeah, I feel the same way about Yahoo Answers. Yahoo I don't think is exactly the greatest in terms of sites anyway. Not only have I come across Yahoo Answers, like you, where most of the time they seem rather dull and/or lacking in good enough information, but another thing is, Yahoo comments section, uuuggh... I believe other users when they claim Yahoo News/comments sections are unpleasant to read. All it took for me was to stumble upon it once, then realized Yahoo I don't think is my kind of site.

It's sometimes helpful as it seems to pop up quite frequently when I search for something. Most of the time it's good for a laugh from either the person asking the question or the person replying.

The website's usefulness depends on the question you ask and the section you ask it in. You just need to sort through the trolls and point-gainers to find the right answers, which you could probably find faster just using a Google search.

As most people have already pointed out it depends on the questions being asked. For instance do a search on some of the political issues we're having right now in Yahoo answers and you'll see a lot of insane and untrue ones.

Mostly I use it when I have a question regarding grammar or software/hardware.

This.

A lot of the search results I've had have been surprisingly informative. But outside of that, not something I've ever used.

Sometimes whenever I search something, I'll get surprisingly good answers on Yahoo! Answers that I can't find anywhere else on the Internet. Other times, I find questions that get crappy answers and remain without a solid response.

I think people try to answer on yahoo to promote their stuff. They don't try to give exact information, they just want to submit their own things and sites which is not good actually. Although we can find very good answers for our queries too on yahoo answers.

I actually find Yahoo Answers pretty helpful. I mean yeah there are trolls on there just like anywhere else but you'd be surprised at how many answers are actually pretty useful.
