I usually check out whatever is popular on RYM. Which is essentially what Fantano and Pitchfork like.
Friends and forums.
And a bit of random chance.
Also: You can use Spotify's API without having an account. It is an open API and people have developed tons of tools for playlist generation and other fun things. For example, here is a playlist generator somebody made that also provides youtube links:
https://www.chosic.com/playlist-generator/
Most often Spotify. Via random playlists, radios, or Podcasts -- or the wife. Occasionally, via Netflix or terrestrial radio.
Rando Youtube playlists, typically 80/90's.
Usually not "new" songs as it is vague memory ones that get stuck in your head.
Spotify is pure gold. I probably listen to it about 10 hours a day. No joke. I listen to it at work during my 10+ hour shifts four days a week pretty much the whole time, and then I listen to it about half the time I am playing games which is probably another 10-15 hours a week. Then in my car when I am driving.
I love music. I really got into podcasts in 2021 which are also great. Love me some Behind The Bastards, Pod Save America, Not Another DnD Podcast, Lions Led By Sheep, and so on.
Anyway, take advantage of any "radio" feature whatever app you're using has. Spotify artist or song radio is really great, leads you down a wonderful rabbit hole.
YouTube rabbit hole.
Yeah, a good music rabbit hole is fun. Feels like about as good an investment of time as you can do while relaxing.
I really like psychadelic/stoner rock and metal, so I listen to this one artist...
...which lead me to a Greek psychedelic rock band....
which led me to a greek death metal band (which is now one of my favorites) and some other song...
...and an hour or two later I somehow stumbled upon Nigerian blues-rock....
And you get the idea haha.
The only down side with YouTube is the algorithm or whatever, and at some point I am going to click on t hat video of people shooting cool guns at appliances and next thing you know I'm seeing ads for conceal carry classes and Prager U lol
Band camp. You can listen to everything before buying, and artists get a much bigger cut than other storefronts.
Yeah apparently Spotify has a really terrible pay system for their artists? I don't know I haven't read too much about it but they pay like a small amount for a lot of listens I guess.
I'd happily pay double for my subscription if it meant artists got paid more, I like Spotify a lot but I want to make sure everyone gets a fair deal.
I'll check out Band Camp, I've heard a few people recommend it.
From Youtube, via the "recommended for you" feature. It suggests various videos based on what you like. I discovered Sabaton on Youtube and they are now one of my favourite bands.
I have Sirius XM (SXM) radio station app as I tend to drive more and more nowadays after my move from the old house to my new house and I no longer take the bus/shuttle to work. I listen to mostly Octane, Liquid Metal, Hip-Hop Nation that plays new music and I do discover new artist/bands from SXM.
Rateyourmusic.com and Pitchfork primarily, though I’ve discovered a few bands through word of mouth. I hate the direction Pitchfork took after the Conde Naste takeover, so RYM is my main go-to now. I also try bands on a whim depending on what type of sound I want to experience. This year has been the year of metal for me, a genre I previously did not “get.”
Fantano is just one guy, and I prefer a consensus before I try listening to a band if I am looking for recommendations. Fantano’s opinion is also so wildly subjective that it’s utterly unpredictable as to what he will like or dislike.
