Hey OT, wanna see how stupid the Australian Govt. is?

Stephen Conroy, minister for broadband and communication in Australia and internet supernazi, wants to put in place a mandatory internet filter that will block child pornography, refused clazsification content and anything the govt. doesn't like, since the blacklist isn't even public. It's also meant to slow down our already horrid internet speeds to a crawl.

It sound bad enough as it is, but then this happens:

The minister Stephen Conroy admits that CIRCUMVENTING THE FILTER IS EASY AND COMPLETELY LEGAL. So now not only do we get our internet slowed, but the damn thing won't even work, wasting millions of tax dollars in the process and making the Stephen Conroy (and the whole govt.) look like a complete joke.

When i heard this i was completely lost for words, i thought governments were run by well-educated members of society, not a bunch of mindless baffoons. Things like these make me ashamed to be an Australian.

Turns out he knew about it since June 2009 and knows that it's pointless yet 6 months later he announces that it will go ahead and has been on a media tour takling about how "100% accurate" and foolproof it is.

I'm Aussie and I hate the idea of this.

I only dislike the fact that they're trying to block stuff without actually telling anyone what it is, so they can pretty much block anything.

Isn't there an independant group to monitor/update the list as need be? Meaning you're not going to see YouTube or Facebook going down.

Also, as far as he knows it doesn't slow down the internet.

In any case, he's been told a billion times - and most people know this - that there are very few websites that host anything illegal, that it's all P2P stuff and that the filter is pointless. Parents shouldn't be so stupid if they're worried their 10 year old son is going to type in something and get pornography. If your kid somehow stumbles upon child pornography it's not by accident.

Sigh, sucks to be us. We've got the environment, that's it, nothing else.

Shame we're the ones who have to deal with his stupidity.

Every time I hear the words "Australia" and "internet" in the same sentence I become even more thankful that I am not living in Australia. Aside from the bs filter they're going to put up, Australia also considers animated porn to be child pornography (some guy got 20 years IIRC for having Simpson's porn on his PC) and, get this, considers porn with A-cup women to be child porn as well (meaning that if your GF/wife has anything less than a B-cup and sends you a naked photo of herself, you're now in posession of child porn according to the Australian government).

Anyway, the whole reason Conroy wants to put up the internet filter is for two reasons:

1) To win points in the election for being tough on pedophila
2) To gain control of the flow of information inside australia

Number 2 may seem far fetched until you learn that over half the sites on the blacklist are not related to porn at all but are rather political and religious sites. And one of those sites is wikileaks which only got banned after it released the blacklist.
