Well if you're an anime nerd you've probably seen most of the typical anime that people are going to recommend. I'm going to try to recommend some off the radar stuff, and a few anime's that just started this season.
K-on! - moe anime about a few girls that start a light music club (ie a band) at school.
07 Ghost - I feel this is mostly a generic action anime, but a lot of people really like it.
Kiss X Sis - OMG ECCHI, ECCHI, ECCHI, in other words perverted as hell w/out actually being porn. Fairly funny IMO also.
Higashi no Eden - a very weird anime about a guy w/ amnesia and a phone that can do anything. I loved it, but the series is stopped until the film comes out in November :cry:
Umineko no Naku Koro ni - I haven't seen any episodes, but I hear it's pretty good for a Horror anime (which isn't saying much). It's your basic murder mystery on some rich dude's island.

Now for some "older" anime that's not normally recommended.
Clannad - Probably the saddest anime I've ever seen. Great characters, touching story, and my god does this series make you cry, and cry, and cry. Probably the best anime drama ever.
Air Gear/Clannad - I put these in the same category since they are great to watch, but both were cancelled before the story finished so you'll have to read the manga if you want more.
D.Grey-man - action anime w/ tons of episodes. It's fairly good, but I stopped watching somewhere after episode 50.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan - I don't tend to like giant mech anime, but this is very entertaining.
Minami-ke - slice of life anime about 3 sisters w/ very different personalities. Good if like slice of life anime's, but there's a lot of people that can't wrap their head around it.
