A small monkey is lately being seen in our garden in morning looking for fruits or tidbits, its kinda small ( maybe lost from group). We got our own nifty garden where we got banana trees but seasonal. It can live in my garden as long as it wishes. But i got no idea how to tame it, or what it eats (besides bananas) or anything at all on monkeys.

If i try to make it my pet, is it a bad idea OT? What you advise?:)

@indzman: Awww, for a second there I thought you were going to adopt some stray person from OT...they deserve a home too!

There's a lot of problems with monkeys as pets from what I've heard. Even if it's legal you might need a permit, and depending on what type of monkey it is, they might be extremely aggressive towards anyone who approaches you, even if it's people you live with or other pets. Not to mention he might live 40 years and it's really hard to give him away after he bonds since they don't take kindly to other people.

Also, I've met some people who do have monkeys as pets and they are just unpredictable (or predictable enough if you remember they're behaving like monkeys)...they bite their owners and destroy things seemingly at random because they get really frustrated out of the blue. It's definitely not the same as having a dog...I for one, would not like to have a monkey...they're only cute the first year or 2...

@indzman: After posting I decided to google a bit and see if I wasn't just talking out of my ass. First article I come to, if they are not scare tactics, makes adopting a monkey sound like the worst decision you could make in your life. Destruction, attacks, lawyers, tons of money on vaccines, teeth extraction, claw extraction, castration, etc etc...it's like a horror movie...

I'd kick out any girlfreind if she tries to harm my dad or sister lol. But really thanks a lot for your warning before i made the mistake. The monkey can stay in my garden anytime, i'll feed it too if i get time. But no way i'll make it my pet anymore :)

Now a 4 man thread!! But on topic, there is a guy that comes into work occasionally with a monkey. In most places they are incredibly expensive. They can also carry potentially deadly diseases so they have to undergo medical testing before you should ever have a monkey as a pet. They can be domesticated but can sometimes be unpredictable. In terms of pets go, monkey can be a decent pet so long as you are willing to put in the time and effort it takes to raise one.

Speaking of monkeys, why do monkeys love to break flowerpots in the balcony?

Monkeys are not pets. Just let it live in your garden for as long as he wants.

let wild animals be wild, there are plenty of domesticated animals out there.

pick a pet that can't take care of itself and actually needs help.

My, admittedly limited, understanding is that it's akin to having a small, very stupid, potentially disease ridden, aggressive human as a pet.

Just curious, where do you live that you got wild monkeys in your back yard?

Having it in your back yard is like having pets but without the needed responsibility of caring for them, like having birds that come to a bird feeder. Me and my sister growing up used to leave nuts and pieces of bread out on our back porch to feed the squirrels and raccoon. Though we had no desire for them as pets, they'd come up to the window and paw on it to get us to come feed them from time to time. We liked it, they'd have babies and bring them along from time to time wanting food. Then my stupid NRA gun loving uncle moved in and chase them away with our automatic BB gun and they never came back; fucker. I loved the animals though, we wouldn't touch them or try petting them but we'd feed them all the same.

Anyhow, if he's coming there to eat the fruit then grow more fruit in your back yard.
