Are there any film scores that any of you would recommend? The composers I like are Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard, and Steve Jablonsky. I like some compositions by other composers, but these guys are the main three. I have the scores for Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Spiderman 2, all three Transformers films, and a few others. What do you guys have in mind?

Enrico Morricone (his work for Leone films especially, GBU is legendary), and everything by Bernard Hermann.

Some recent ones that I would suggest would be X-Men First Class, Black Swan, and Tron Legacy.

I sampled X-Men: First Class. The only track I like and bought is Frankenstein's Monster.

It grew on me. Some of my favorites are First Class, Magneto, Beast or Not to Beast.

I've got the score to Inception, and I've sampled that of the latest Star Trek film. As for Moon, I'll check it out.

howard shore's lotr score is probably my favorite. its obviously meant to accompany the imagery, but i like it on its own too. shore has a lot of other great scores as well. id recommend naked lunch and the fly.

jerry goldsmith is pretty damn great too. he scored planet of the apes (1968), chinatown, and patton.

also, if you like the combination of the music to imagery, id really recommend checking out stanley kubrick's films if you havent already. he didnt often use an original score, but the fusion of sight to preexisting pieces makes for some of my favorite moments in film. 2001, barry lyndon, and a clockwork orange (i probably shouldnt link to the full scene, but trust me its even better).

Let me think:

  • Alan Silvestri (Van Helsing)
  • Atticus Ross (The Book of Eli)
  • Clint Mansell (Requiem for a Dream)
  • Enrico Morricone (Inglorious Basterds)
  • Johann Johannson (Battle: Los Angeles)
  • John Williams (Star Wars)
  • Michael Giachinno (Cloverfield)
  • Zack Hemsey (Inception)

Shame on me. I forgot to mention John Williams. He composed the scores for the Star Wars films, which are great.

Blasphemy. Just listen to how well he's able to transition from a slow paced, soft, and heartwarming melody to a faster paced, heart-pumping one. He's one of the best.

That was not much of a transition at all I'd say. It just jumps straight to the other song. Though I must say he got much better with the later trilogy (I-II-III)

Or somewhat more importantly, Back to the Future. :P

Anyway, hm...I loved the soundtracks to Oldboy, Dead Man and Brick. Also the music from most John Carpenter films - at least for their 80s campy awesomeness.
