So yeah big win for equality today. In a 5-4 decision the Supreme Court has made marriage between 2 people regardless of sexual orientation legal. http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/06/27/us/supreme-court-same-sex-marriage.html?referrer=

Great news. Time to celebrate the news in South Carolina, Mississippi, Texas, Georgia, or Alabama.

Expected. Just read through a lot of Scalia's dissent. How on Earth is that short troll even a SC Justice? His reasoning is both fallacious and atrocious.

Thomas's is even worse. He straight up says the government can't strip anyone's dignity which is just ridiculous to claim.

"I will not acquiesce to an imperial court any more than our Founders acquiesced to an imperial British monarch," Huckabee said. "We must resist and reject judicial tyranny, not retreat."

A presidential hopeful straight up saying '**** the legal institutions of our society'. Yeah, real tyrannical there. Someone needs a dictionary.

LMAO how on earth could someone - let alone a presidential candidate - spout that malarkey openly? It basically says the judiciary is sovereign and esteemed in as much as it agrees with my views and furthers my agenda; that sums up the conservative approach to governance and public institutions.

I find Justice Roberts statement disturbing. All you have to do is change a few words around and...

"In his dissent, Roberts argued that by declaring gay marriage a right they overstepped their constitutional bounds into the realm of legislative matters.

"Today, however, the Court takes the extraordinary step of ordering every State to license and recognize same-sex marriage," Roberts wrote. "Many people will rejoice at this decision, and I begrudge none their celebration. But for those who believe in a government of laws, not of men, the majority’s approach is deeply disheartening. Supporters of same-sex marriage have achieved considerable success persuading their fellow citizens—through the democratic process—to adopt their view. That ends today. Five lawyers have closed the debate and enacted their own vision of marriage as a matter of constitutional law.""

"Today, however, the Court takes the extraordinary step of ordering every State to license and recognize de-segregation," Roberts wrote. "Many people will rejoice at this decision, and I begrudge none their celebration. But for those who believe in a government of laws, not of men, the majority’s approach is deeply disheartening. Supporters of de-segregation have achieved considerable success persuading their fellow citizens—through the democratic process—to adopt their view. That ends today. Five lawyers have closed the debate and enacted their own vision of racial equality as a matter of constitutional law."

@lostrib: lol

But seriously, I do wish you guys better luck in the second important battle: Gay couples (married or otherwise) being able adopt kids. Not sure if that is already a thing there (if it is, awesome!) but here (Portugal) unfortunately that has been a very uphill battle. Very little progress on that has been made ever since gay marriage was approved in 2007.

The issue was nothing more than a way to take people's minds off of important issues. The government should not be involved in marriage. Period. Unless you are a gay American who wanted to get married, your life isn't effected by this ruling or the actions of this ruling contrary to what some want us to believe.

Mexico too, it´s only those retards of the Catholic Church and the conservative wing of the PAN political party the ones against gay marriage but fortunately nobody fucking needs them.

What's awesome about this is the effect on the kids in who will start school/reach an age of understanding the world in 5-10 years. When gay marriage was approved in my country, despite being young, I still had to adapt what I knew of the world/my country to add that new bit of it all. Not that I was against it, but it was something new from the status quo.

However my nieces, which are still in primary school, don't even question it. That is the status quo for them, gay marriage is just like any old thing that might as well have existed for 1000's of years! And that is amazing to see honestly! :)

Unless parents are dicks about it and "teach" them that it's wrong, the next generations should in theory be much more accepting of it and see it as it should be seen: a normal occurrence in everyday life.

I think that is one that is state by state, but in most states it is legal, but may be more difficult

That's awesome. But I'm sure certain states will find ways to make it difficult for same sex couple to get married that it effectively act as bans. Look at DC vs Heller (incidentally also 5-4 decision), it lifted the ban on guns, but it's still next to impossible to own guns in DC.
