Link source from BBC

When Prime Minister Manuel Valls assured that the new law "has no resemblance to the Patriot Act" in the US and "offers concrete guarantees for our compatriots such as they have never had before in the matter of intelligence-gathering", MPs showed little inclination to argue.

All I can say for France, Hail Hydra!

At this point, if people don't want to be watched, they need to go off the grid. And there are plenty of people that do.

And Conservatives thought Obama was a socialist.... But it's scary though, coming from a country that celebrated freedom, liberty, and love for a long time, and now passing a law that makes the country more of a police state ever since the death of Charlie Hebdo. We're starting to live in a more paranoia society.

I wouldn't call invasive surveillance socialism. It's much closer to fascism than anything.

Bring in people from the third world who want to kill you, pass laws that destroy everyone's right to privacy.

What a winning gameplan all in the name of fairness.

Oh the irony: the French are about to lose one big chunk of their cherished liberties because of a fetish for said liberties.

On a side note, TC needs some political economy tutoring.

Well put. Didn't even need to crash planes to do it either, so it was a real low cost, high return investment.

Yep. We've got an alliance lined up with the League of Assassins, so SHIELD won't be able to beat that. Ain't no stopping us now, we're on the move.

I'd say it was because of the crazed lunatics that went out and murdered people over said liberties and the resulting fear of that depraved act, then some "fetish" over them.

It's true though, it's hard to keep liberties when you have sub-human monsters holding the population at gun point and killing people because they were insulted over something someone said (or drew).

It's kind of crazy the way some people think actually. The suggestion that France is posed to lose a chunk of their freedom because of some sick fetish is literally being a terrorist apologist...the real travesty here is that they might loose it because of the actions of fanatical lunatics willing to mass murder over being insulted.

These people, and the people that sympathize with them, aren't compatible with civilized society.

I say its both because of a handful of lunatics who are willing to go thus far and because of a fetish for triggering these people. If that's your definition of apologism then yes I'm an apologist-it'd be a dimwitted definition nonetheless.

Such hyperbolic rhetoric reveals the irrationality of those espousing such lawlessness, something that is further accentuated upon arguing with them.

Hyperbolic rhetoric? You have people committing mass-murder for drawing pictures...there's nothing hyperbolic about it. These are crazed lunatic fanatics who have no place in the modern world, and deserve no respect or consideration of their motives. Yes, you are an apologist, and it's an apt definition.

Bottom line is the world shouldn't be held hostage to the whims and triggers of insane fanatical cavemen.

There isn't an intelligence community in the world large enough to spend time monitoring non important individuals.

It's an invasion of privacy, also this just proves how vulnerable France is after one shooting. The terrorist won and France has made themselves a joke of what they fought for and believe in, and that's liberty.

Hate to break it to you but this isn't actually a new phenomenon.

Also anything that goes over the air so to speak isn't private.

The invasive surveillance per se isn't socialism, nor is it "fascism". Nor are totalitarianism and socialism mutually exclusive. Governments of different kinds - including many socialist governments, for instance the Stasi in East Germany - have used invasive surveillance and other authoritarian measures.

My guess as to why the TC used the term socialist is because the President of France is socialist and his bloc also controls the parliament.
