im not a particularly religious person myself (i say that lightly as i have no real faith but im not completely against the idea either) but i noticed that a lot of people who say god/gods don't exist usually blame god for a lot of things that go wrong in their life. I do it too sometimes so im not really being a hater but i was wondering what other people's views are on it are?

I don't know why everyone goes "Jesus Christ" and not "Buddha" or "Allah" when they're all two syllables.

So are they saying it just to annoy Christians or what? I mean personally I wouldn't swear using someone I don't believe in's name. It's like saying "THE SPAGHETTI MONSTER!!!!" because it just means nothing.

I have no idea why people used the names of deities to swear, I'm just replying to your question why people don't say "Buddha" or "Allah" when they swear.

Blaspheming is common among religious and non-religious people since it's a cultural phenomenon.

I personally do also find it annoying when people blaspheme, so please don't think it's only clean-mouthed Christians that get annoyed by it.

I'd whole-heartedly champion your efforts to say "THE FLYING-SPAGHETTI MONSTER" (you left out the important flying bit) instead of using an expletive or blaspheming.

The thing is that many times when people use phrases such as "god dammit", "oh god", "good lord..." etc they dont actually want to call upon God or even reference him specifically.

They are simply phrases that through common use have been mostly connected to certain situations (fear, anger, something going wrong, despair, sarcasm etc) and are used in them regardless of whether or not someone really wants to reference god.

For instance in Greek, the slang derogatory term for "homosexual" is used in some phrases ( οχι ρε πουστη μου! - τον πουστη μου μεσα! ) but when people use them they dont refer to gay people in any way. They are used when someone is pissed or negatively surprised usually and simply express those emotions.

even though i am an atheist. i do use Jesus Christ quite a lot.

mainly i think because i like the way the words sound. lets say im going to the toilet in the dark and i stub a toe yelling JESUS CHRIST!!!!! is quite satisfying or if im waiting for the gf to get out of the bathroom and im getting annoyed yelling FOR CHRIST SAKE GET OUT THE TOILET!!!! or once i stood for a good 10 mins waiting for the kettle to boil and i yelled JESUS CHRIST THIS KETTLE IS TAKE AGES TO BOIL!!!!! it turned out id not plugged the kettle in... but that beside the point.

I do believe in god in some ways, I never go to church but I do know he gaved up his life for us to be free on Easter. But for your question I do not swear in vain, but I'm not one to judge others and their beliefs.

probably because "everyone" you've heard say that comes from a region where christianity is the norm. and thats what they've been accustomed to within the english language. and it's funner to say.

You're over analysing things TC.

People from many walks of life use it as a turn of phrase (figure of speech). It has no further significance whatsoever for the majority of those who say it.

i think i didnt make it clear enough :) haha i meant when people say things like "f*** god" or "I hate god" when something goes wrong in there life. i know that the whole "JESUS F****** CHRIST" is just a norm especially in australia lol but im more interested in why people find a need to swear AT "god" when something goes wrong....i mean does it mean they think he exists to an extent or are they just looking for something to blame?? or something completely different.....

Maybe that's what made them leave religion: they expected to be handed everything. If God loves you, he won't spoil you like that. Stuff that's put in your lap effortlessly becomes meaningless quickly.

People can swear at god for a million different reasons. The prequisite doesn't even have to be in connection of things going awry, example: watching a porn movie where the actress vociferates "oh god, f***.", underscoring her euphoria. What we can learn from this is that god can be used as a superlative to emphasize the nature of whatever idea you're conveying, it can be mere emotional connotations to the word god that makes a person use it, without regarding the intellectual value of the word, something very much in the general spirit of utilizing superlatives in speech.

It is imprinted into our neural pathways. Hearing something and saying something over a long time strengthens those pathways making the brain connect to those fastest within the given situations. It is the reason it is so hard to unlearn something and to give up on religion.

Oh lord, another religion thread, for the love of god stop making them. Being an athiest, I don't care if people swear at him, it's not my business. God dammit, I'd rather have another hating Justin Beiber thread.

 What is this really? Its a figure of speech, its used in society commonly.... It has nothing to do with being religious at all.. I would argue when they say such terms they really aren't damning any, let alone supposedly god.. Its just a figure speech that has been used so often to promote strong emotion behind it.. Whether its frustration, over other things... What does this have anything to even do with what god does and doesn't do.

i dont belive in god but ofcourse i say omg but usually its tons of different words for satan i use as swearwords...but i dont belive in satan either... its just how the language develope and what u grow up with people around u saying its nothing really to do with religion to be honest and its nothing against religious people
