Feminist professor attacks pro life student

Article

The University of California-Santa Barbara professor who allegedly assaulted a pro-life student on campus has been charged with criminal battery.

The College Fix reported on March 12 that department of feminist studies professor Mireille Miller-Young, whose research emphasis is black studies, pornography, and sex work, had been caught on camera assaulting a 16-year-old student, Thrin Short.

Miller-Young led a small mob that approached a group of pro-life demonstrators who were holding signs. The mob chanted “tear down the sign.” Miller-Young then grabbed one of the signs and stormed off with it, eventually engaging in a physical altercation with 16-year-old Short, one of the pro-life demonstrators, when Short tried to retrieve the stolen sign.

The confrontation took place in the university’s designated “free speech area.”

The 3 by 5 foot sign contained graphic images of aborted fetuses as well as statistics and facts about abortion. The scuffle left the 16-year-old Short with visible scars and scratches on her arms.

Even though she injured the teenager, Miller-Young defended her actions and told police she felt morally justified. She told police that images of aborted fetuses “triggered” her to act the way she did, and that she felt she had set a good example for her students by physically confronting the teenage demonstrator.

Nevertheless, authorities warned that her actions constituted vandalism, battery, and robbery.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, I don't agree with pro-life people either, but to physically assault them is never justified. I mean, this is a professor for crying out loud. She should set an example by going into a discussion with these people, but instead she chose to bully them.

It should never come to any physical violence, and that goes both ways. We hear far more about pro-life protesters assaulting or attacking doctors and nurses who are a part of abortions, but the kind of violence that goes the other way also happens.

We're a sophistically advanced society, and we should be able to work situations like this out with discussion, not violence.

I'm even more upset that a college professor was involved. Educate, rather than attack. Attacking your opponent not only fuels the fire, but it gives them a lot of media support too.

I will add one thing to this, and that is the fact that I don't trust the article from a bias standpoint. I have no doubt that a right-wing news source, even a college one, would not present the entire story. A quick search of the news reveals that only the right-wing media outlets are reporting on this subject. I wonder if there is more to the story.

Its really the third wave feminists that make the purpose of feminism look bad. Don't over generalize.

Perhaps because men still make up the majority of wealth in the nation, the majority of political power and pretty much hold the highest positions in the military.. The mere fact that women are barred from certain jobs in the military based on their sex alone really should illustrate this. Hell the whole scandal a few years back in which military heads were caught in intimidating and ignoring accusations and reports by women serving that they were sexually assaulted or raped while serving should illustrate why we still need a said movement..

Yeah it should never come to violence, and that goes for everyone.

Edit, holy crap the article's comments represent all that us wrong with the internet.

Look at the Democratic and Republican conventions, hundreds are arrested at the Republican conventions for disorderly conduct but you never hear of it at the Democrat conventions. I am not saying one side's views are any better than another's because I take from both, but the way the left expresses their views always seems kind of Looney Toons. I know the right has its loons as well, just seems more common among the left. You would think all the pot would calm them ;)

You once again exhibit your intellectual dishonesty when you intentionally and conveniently leave out the part where I also stated "I know the right has its loons as well". Thank you for showing me the type of person you are though, it allows me to not engage in debates with you except in self defense, such as this.

Yea look at 2004 and 2008. 1800 people were arrested at the 2004 Republican convention, and it cost NYC millions in lawsuits lol. Went down to 300 in 2008. The 2012 one in Tampa was the most peaceful with only a few arrests, this was more attributed to the "police-state" type security more than anything lol. They had close to 2000 beds ready at the local jail though if that tells you anything.

Good luck finding anything about arrests at the Democratic conventions of the same year.

You seem to be under the false impression that if you just say "Both sides do it!" that the entirety of your argument is somehow immune from criticism. Its sort of the same logic political pundits use to justify anything they say so long as they end it in a question mark.

You would have a valid point if my views were actually criticized. Where were my points criticized or even attempted to be proven wrong here? All he did was post some right wing loon stuff, which I already conceded to. He did so all the while conveniently leaving out the fact I said the right wing has loons as well. This is called diverting sir, and nothing more. You are just as intellectually dishonest as he is because you attempted to challenge my point with a simple denial, to which I responded with more specific facts. Now here you are diverting right along with the rest lol. YOu had no answer to my views so here we are, you changed the subject. Awesome.

It amazes me how there are so many "forward thinkers" on this forum, yet most of you just use these silly tactics against people who disagree with you rather than having a simple conversation. There was zero value in his reply, zero. It was a silly attempt at diverting the topic form looney left to looney right.

You are comparing extremists to the moderately looney American passionate about their politics. I am talking about disorderly conduct type stuff, not freaking murder. Anti-abortion violence and KKK type extreme right wing stuff is in a class all its own, no typical Republican should ever be put into that same category. Just as every day Democrats should not be put in the same category as eco-terrorists. This is me trying to be fair again, something you guys should first try to recognize, then maybe even practice yourselves. Like I said, I take from the right and the left and consider myself a moderate Libertarian more than anything else.

This is the problem, too many people are so invested in their left or right views they cannot see the forest through the trees. And the fact remains, you intentionally left out me acknowledging the right has loons in order to bolster your point.

Regardless of where you stand, protesting should be allowed and it should never turn to physical violence. Anyone who can attack a 16 year old student especially if they are much younger than themselves has serious mental problems.

It's people like this that make 'feminist' a dirty word. It's pathetic. These people are what Westboro is to Christianity.

It's sad that women who are not batshit insane who want to be treated as equals, and who want to have control over their own reproductive rights get bunched in with these disgusting useless hags. Not everyone who calls themselves feminist is like this. You just don't hear about the normal people because they provide no insanity to warrant becoming headline news.

Very unfortunate that something that started with the intention to better life for women everywhere has turned into something so ugly and the face of it has become these idiots.

I would not call them radical, I would call abortion clinic bombers radical. Protesting and getting out of line enough to get arrested on a misdemeanor charge is not "radical" in my book, just looney.

How about the Obama heckler's that have to be removed all the time for being disruptive? Everyone I have seen has been some lefter yelling crazy stuff about the Gitmo or Afghanistan, gun control, drone strikes etc.

Look, just some anecdotal opinion pieces from me, all it is. Nothing I can prove, I can only observe. My observation is the every day wackos doing this illy stuff come from the left. Yes the right has its own wackos as well, just more of the rank and file nuts seem to come from the left. This is not even about politics for me, I agree with the left on social issues.

Just an observation, not saying all liberals are loons btw.

There also tend to be a lot more young, disenfranchised people that are more prone to emotion on the left side of the political spectrum. The right is mostly made up of middle-aged, white pussies.
