Anecdotally, most American men are slobs. I admit that I am... not one of them.

I go to the gym 4 days a week and I'm in excellent shape (6', 183 lbs., 32" waist, 8% bodyfat), I don't drink soda or alcohol at all and I watch what I eat, I like to wear suits with nice shoes and I follow a personal grooming and style regimen (vis a vis, I show up appropriately dressed to formal or business occasions), and while I play a ton of video games, I have other diverse interests including cars, fashion, music, art, etc.

I went to buy a suit today at Nordstrom and the other guys there were either with their wives or mothers and none looked happy about it. I tried on a ton of suits and found most are made for fatter men and I ended up buying a pricey European suit because that was the only one that fit properly (I didn't want to but Euros aren't as fat as Americans and their clothes are made slimmer; thank goodness I didn't have to buy a bespoke suit because that would have cost even more).

I've observed (again, anecdotally) that most American men are out of shape, not well groomed, drink too much soda and beer, consume too many processed foods, are not sophisticated or urbane, are not well traveled, and are not cultured and don't have diverse interests (being into the NFL or video games are the pinnacle of their cultured tastes).

There's a point to all this. To a degree, slovenly American men is a good thing because now American women can judge us as harshly as we judge them. The ladies have earned the right to laugh at the beer guts, stained shirts, socks and flip flop slobs that most (but not all) of us have become.

Well, you were shopping at a rather large department store. It's not surprising that they were lacking smaller sizes. Mostly because they are trying to make as much profit as possible and you are in the minority.

I would suggest going to the Men's Wearhouse instead. Or a tailor, if you've got some money.

But you are coming off as quite the snobbish douchebag.

What I've learned from this thread, is that TC considers you a slob if you fail to adhere by any one of the following:

Go to the gym 4-5 days a week
Suit up constantly
Keep your hair perfectly groomed 24/7 (sleeping must be rough)
Be well Traveled
Know lots about other cultures
Be sophisticated
Never consume any food that is processed.
Never drink beer or soda
Enjoy things other than sports and video games.

IMO: TC is a douchebag, and 99% of Gamespot is a slob according to his standards.

Compared to the average European, Americans work more hours. No surprise that many don't want to do anything else after a day of work. There's still the weekend, but some of that time is spent on catching up with chores and preparation for the next work week.

Europeans in general lead a more stress-free lifestyle with more free time.

I'm with this guy.

I go to the gym as often as I can

Never drink soda or junk food, (only now and then)

Very well groomed, have an excellent sence of fashion.

And I'm gonna buy my first suit.

I can't stand slobs, but then I see how many hours they work, and the kids they feed, and family they maintain.

I want to say something, but at the end of the day they're more of a man than I am, no matter how great my jacket looks, how much more fit I am than them, or what girlfriend I have.

They're lifting something pretty heavy in life.

Sounds like you should focus less on not being a slob, and focus more on not being too broke to buy clothes that fit you.

Even if a guy had a family and works, he can still eat right, dress well, and stay in shape. I read something where married women admitted that they wished their men would love weight and dress better and don't like it when their men let themselves go.

No excuses.

Define slob? My room tends to be pretty messy and I eat a lot of junk but I always wear clean clothes and I bathe daily. Plus, even though I'm about 6'1" and about 200 lbs, I don't look that big. So I can't really say if I'm a slob or not.

I'm a slob when it comes to keeping my home spic and span. For example, my den always have all types of computer parts and cables lying around. I do have enough common sense to not let it get out of hand. I eventually set aside time to clean up.

As for myself..... I keep physically fit which include exercise and proper hygiene. It's a habit from my active duty days.

I'm not one of those "metrosexual" guys who spend almost as much time as my wife on vanity.

It's honestly another full-time job on top of your full-time job (and your second, part-time job you do for extra needed money) and your full-time schooling so you don't have to have that second part-time job.

I would absolutely love to see TC try to juggle full-time schooling, two jobs and two kids while trying to find time to work out. You don't come out of that stuff looking pretty.

I pretty much fit TC's definition of slob in every way he listed. I have a sizable gut, and it looks funny because that's the only place in my body where fat accumulates. My arms and legs are fine, but with my belly, my body looks weird. I occasionally brush my hair to make it look okay, but I stopped caring about it a while ago. I don't wear anything special, unless you consider Levies jeans fashionable. Almost all the foods I eat on a regular basis are either processed or fast food, and I rarely, if ever, work out. My beverage consumption is mainly soft drinks and Gatorade. I don't care to know a lot about other cultures because I'm not a fucking anthropologist. My sole hobby is gaming, if that can even be considered a hobby in the 21st century anymore. Looks like I'm a terrible person. Better go run into the nearest busy intersection.

Not in shape? Check.

Not well groomed and dressed? Check.

Eat too much processed foods? Check.

Drink too much soft drinks? Check.

Doesn't know much about other cultures? Check.

No diverse interests? Check.

I don't work out. I'm not fat but I'm not skinny either. I don't clean everyday but if it gets really dirty I go to town. I shower daily unless I'm not going anywhere because I don't have anyone to impress. I wear jeans and band shirts everyday. I usually have a beard and long or shaggy hair but I clean up for funerals, weddings and whatever. I eat anything that tastes good and drink soda mostly. If all that makes me a slob then idc because i don't have time to not be a slob.

I go to the gym 4 times a year, and I'm in abhorrent shape (5'5, 125 lbs, 28" waist) I drink soda and alcohol more than water, and I don't give a shit what I eat, as long as it tastes good. I don't like to change out of my flannel pajama bottoms in the morning (well, afternoon, really) so I avoid it whenever I can. I have permanent stubble, and precisely 1 suit that I haven't worn for two years. I play a ton of video games, and other interest such as porn, pizza pops, death metal, and white widow.

I went to buy some bulk underwear at Walmart and felt a little self-conscious at the size of the mans genitals on the front of the packaging, I ended up opening the packaging and taking the contents inside and promptly left the store without paying for the product.

I've observed (again, aneckadootilly) that most American men are out of shape, not well groomed, drink too much soda and beer, consume too many processed foods, are not sophisticated or urbane, are not well traveled, and are not cultured and don't have diverse interests. This means..something very important and relevant.

Slovenly American men is a good thing because now American women can judge us as harshly as we judge them. The ladies have earned the right to laugh at the beer guts, stained shirts, socks and flip flop slobs that most (but not all) of us have become. Because there is nothing more beautiful, classy, and refined than an American woman.

The ladies have earned the right to laugh at the beer guts, stained shirts, socks and flip flop slobs that most (but not all) of us have become.

so..you're gay? I'm guessing you are. There was no mention of how one should treat a woman in your post.

No I'm not TEH GHEYS but I do occasionally watch the Travel Channel.

Also, about being a parent: despite it taking time, there is still time to stay in shape. I'll bet good money that for the slobby dads out there, if you attach a lie detector to your wife/significant other, they would probably admit that they would prefer that you dress better and exercise to get rid of the beer guts. And, maybe, take them to a nice place or two on occasion.

If you are a slob and happy, great. But presentation counts and not being presentable is going to effect many negative aspects in life. Women have known this and are judged by it every day, and now it's only fair for men to be judged on it as well.

Not to go off topic... but the first three lines of the very first post read a lot like something out of a dating site.

That said slob or not, all it comes down to is if you're happy in your life. The end. Everything else is shallow crap that doesn't really affect you unless you care about it. And before anyone starts calling me a slob or being gay for not mentioning women in my post, I've been a slob and trimmed right down because it was my lifestyle choice and it made me happy. And slob or otherwise I was happy because I had different things that mattered to me in completely varied situations in my life.
