if you were to have a child/or have a child...would you let them play games that are out of there age group (i.e. Gears of war, resident evil, or any other violent/gore catagory game) or restrict them to play games within there age group? and why? or not let them play at all?

(sociology class project)

It strikes me as inappropriate to be letting little kids play such awfully violent video games.

Depending on how mature I found them. If I had a bratty immature child there would be no way I would let them. But if my child were polite, did well in school, and was socially and physically active, I'd be fine with them playing M games. (Maybe not Gears though...)

This is how I would disect the minumum age my child (if I had one) could play a certain rated game:

ec-any age

E-Any age

E10-6

T-8

M-13

Ao-18 (obviously this rating says only people ages 18 and over could play these games)

There ya go.

My children can play whatever they want as long as they realize what they're playing is not real and that they don't try to imitate what they see in reality. I'll watch what they play though, to make sure they don't get so into the game they forget what's real and whats not.

i dont know if id confine them to JUST their age group

but i definitely wouldnt let them play resident evil or other completly mindless killing

with the exception of the war games or tactical shooters (not sure what theyre called, but the ones based on actual events)

because while they do include guns and violence its in a different context. Wars are always happening, where as watching the crap in resident evil isnt.

obviously if they show signs of becoming "followers" due to a violent game, i would get involved

i would only let them play those games if i knew they were smart and stable enough to know that its just a game.

If there is respect and love going on I would let them play some games with killing monsters like a RPG. The only thing is all they have to do is go over to a friend's house, heh thats ok.

I wouldn't let them play a violent game at a very young age.

No, but I would let them play M (M is the equlivent of T in Australia) because of the lack of gore, and that they need to get their lessons of "War is Hell" from somewhere.
