I really like the new Hobbit movies, even more so than the Lord of the rings movies, but the question I have is, How come the dwarves didn't help in the Lord of the rings stories?

Some of the dwarves did help, but many of them are dead as seen in the mines of Moria.

The dwarves did help. They sent Gimli and Gloin to Rivendell and Gimli joined the fellowship. I think they also helped rebuild Helms Deep as well after everything.

They fought orcs in the north, outside the scope of the main storyline. They had their own battles to attend to, for the most part. And Gimli joined the fellowship, of course.
