Poll Do you have a criminal record, OT? (48 votes)
I am a law-abiding citizen. I don't care if the snobby hipsters, conspiracy theorists and juvenile delinquents hate me for it.

Not having a criminal record does not mean you're a law abiding citizen. I did a bunch of stuff when I was a late teen, early 20s that easily could have netted me a jail sentence...but I was never caught. I probably smoked my bodyweight in pot over a 13 year period, and that's just an example of the victim-less crimes I committed.
Yes and it sucks. Basically can't get hired anywhere so now I am forced to leech off the welfare system for a mistake I made years ago. Thanks Canada. I already went to jail to pay my debt to society and now you put a massive barrier against me to get work and contribute as a law abiding citizen. It's like they want me to fail.
Does a traffic ticket count? That's the only criminal offense I've ever gotten caught for, but hey, I have plenty of time to make up for that.
Nope, I'm clean.
In this day and age though, I imagine its possible a few users may come in here saying they honestly feel that they are law-abiding citizens, but unfortunately have had the misfortune of getting a criminal record where they shouldn't have. Dem Justice Systems sadly be sometimes real messed up man.

You do realize that you can apply for a pardon/records suspension if it is 5 yrs or more ago? In Canada the hiring question is always 'for which you have not been pardoned'. Get one and your barrier to employment disappears.

So what you did wasn't intentional? Otherwise, it's not a mistake, just a piss-poor decision.

Yeah, that's one thing I don't like about the US system as well. It creates a situation where it's almost lures you back to crime. They should have some kind of forgiveness, where after a a certain amount of time, your record becomes clean for all but the most egregious of crimes. And for those, people most likely won't be getting out of jail, so it doesnt matter.
Nope, but even if I did, I should've had myself charged for juvenile criminal with 3 counts a long time ago, those are attempted assault and murder and mutilation against someone I hate for years and still lingering in my angering soul to this day.
@SUD123456: It used to be 3 or 5 years depending on the offense. Harper the jerk raised it to 5 or 10 years in 2012. I have an indictable offense. I have to wait 10 years the day I was let out of jail to get a pardon. So I have to wait until 2023.
Can't get a high paying job with a record. And the minimum wage jobs are all taken. So I am forced to go on welfare for the next 8 years while I desperately search for just a shitty minimum wage job.
It gets worse because half of the minimum wage jobs are now demanding for a clean record. The system is fucked up. It is designed to keep the poor from ever having a chance.
Oh well. At least I have my health.
I have a felony.
What is it?
Well, it's a long story and it's something I didn't mean to do.
I was in a position where I couldn't afford my meds. I have bi polar disorder so I was manic. I thought people were poisoning me and trying to kill me so I picked up a knife but didn't hurt anybody. The cops were called.
I have Unlawful use of a Weapon and it goes away as soon as my probation ends because I was bi polar. So instead of staying on my record for the usual seven years after probation, it will go away the day my probation ends..
and then I will have no record. I'm a good guy and it was just bad luck and circumstance.
@stuff238: Lie on your job application then. Most employers in Canada do not actually check before they hire you. Of course they can fire you with cause if they find out, but it is not likely they will find out, nor do you have much to lose compared to where you are now. And unless I am mistaken, you are still eligible for all sorts of trade skills subsidized training which would set you up with plenty of employment options.
@positive_gamer: Who who are you? Well anyways, while I may have a clean record, I did get into trouble but nothing to get a criminal record from the cops.
I believe he was referencing the song to Outkast "So fresh, So clean" from their 2000 "Stankonia" album.
A security guard at DisneyWorld chastised me for dicking with a wheelchair a group of friends and I found in a parking lot.
I don't have a criminal record outside of getting caught with a little bit of weed on a road trip once, but I did spend a bit of time in a mental institution. I have diagnosed bipolar disorder. I'm not entirely sure why that would be in the same category as criminal activity though.
