Or do you think this a more modern addition to the mythology, like sparkling?

If you mean invited into your house. Then no. Why would they care about asking to come in if they are going to kill you?
Also sparkling is NOT an addition to the mythology.
Edit: Ah, yes. Forgot about all that older stuff. I'm no vampire expert. *shrug*
I was under the impression that light has holy significance. Therefore, if a vampire or any other unholy entity were to encounter it, they would be destroyed. As far as your question, I haven't noticed the idea of inviting a vampire in except in certain circles. On the other hand, their going after the life force of human beings and more potent--virgin girls can be seen in both western and eastern stories.
I'm not a vampire historian or anything, but I have seen a few films and heard a few stories.
don't do it they will drink up all your clamato juice!
anyway that's one of the older things in the mythology.
btw, lol at the sparkly stuff that is just so so sooooo stupid.
the concept of vampires has always cracked me up. Most of the movies on the subject have one or two major problems that make really bad.
I don't know. I've only heard this in passing, but I've never watched anything where this was an issue. Though, I haven't really watched much vampire stuff. Twilight sort of killed the mithology.
All I know is that Drac never had that problem, because all the ladies came to him 8)
In certain European lore, vampires (e.g. Dracula) cannot enter a room they have not been invited into. Every mythological creature has to have some kind of weird kryptonite like that.harashawnYou mean sun, garlic, crosses, holy water, stakes through the heart, and death of the head vampire weren't enough? Come to think of it, vampires are wimps.

Actually it's more than that, True Blood follows the same pattern
Let the Right One In does too.If they needed to be invited, I doubt people would keep stakes in their homes, hang garlic, or put anything around their doors to deter the vampires, because unless you have a VERY hard time saying no or they can jedi-mind-trick you (which would defeat the point of them needing permission anyway), they can't get you.XilePrincessThe whole idea of vampires is they're supposed to be charming. They get their pray by attracting them rather than hunting. The other defense is relatively the same idea as having a lock, chain, and deadbolt on a door.
[QUOTE="CMFreezy"]Yes its true they have to be invited in, and they do not sparkle.Pffrbt
Have you ever met a vampire?
I have. He disguised himself as a vaccum salesman, but I knew his real intentions. I told him to stay out of my house and if he even tries to take a drop of my wife's blood I'll shove a steak right though his heart. I'd have to tie him up so he doesn't escape while I cook it, though.[QUOTE="solidruss"]

Let the Right One In does too.Yeah that's what I was thinking of when I clicked on this thread. I recently just read the book. It's been part of the vampire mythology for a while. At the very least, it's been part of vampire lore since the first vampire Hollywood movies (a lot of monster myths seems to come from old Hollywood films). The idea is evil can't simply walk into your house. You have to invite it in. I think the rule applies to all demonic forms.cd_rom
Yeah, something like this.
The idea of a vampire is mostly based on basic human urges and desire. A vampire is what all people want to be but choose not to be because of they still have somehumanity. Only you can let evil into your life, you can choose to ignore it, but a lot of the time you won't be aware of the choices you're making in your eyes it seems perfectly innocent.
