So I'm Canadian, born in Ontario and I'm curious as to what others think about our accents.
Do we sound funny?
When I still lived at Upstate New York, we saw a lot of Canadian tourists visiting the casinos. They're usually from Ontario province because it's the closest. There were some who conversed with us. They didn't sound that much different from the locals. Of course, we didn't spend time analyzing their accent either. We understood what they were saying and that was good enough.
Accents.............apparently they spell that differently up there lol.
No it's not so different but they do see aboot and eh.
the funny thing about the stereotypical 'Canadian' accent is that it only really exists in Ontario and maybe parts of the Maritimes. It also sounds the same as people from like Minnesota.
I live in BC, and i think people who were born here mostly sound the same as people in the West Coast states like Washington, Oregon and California.
There are lots of Canadian accents... Even the small community I'm from has it's own pretty much unique one.
Some are stranger than others.
Not really.
There are a few pronunciations that stick out, for example you say "zed" when saying the letter "z" instead of how others say "zee". Apparently this stems from the fact that "z" was for "zeta" so it evolved to "zed". I remember watching Stargate: Atlantis and the chief engineer guy was Canadian and he kept saying ZPE (zero-point energy) "zed pee ee" or something like that; it was a bit distracting but only because I had not heard it that way.
There's also the whole "oo" sound when words have "ou" in them, like "About" is pronounced "aboot", but I think that is mostly just some Canadians.
Mostly though the only weird thing about Canada is how there are French accents and French-speaking people up there. Just seems odd, not bad odd just different, to have something so European so close to the US haha.
*Oh there are Newfoundlanders though (Newfies?) They seem to have a strong accent based on what I've seen of Traieler Park Boys. I Imagine that Newfoundland is to Canada what Cornwall is to England?
All accents sound funny. Sothern Canadians sound a bit American to me, but us aussies get confused with being a brit online all the time.
No, no they don't, no-one confuses Australians with Brits.
I confuse them all the time and I've lived in oz for 4 years. Sound the same to me, same with some South Africans and New Zealanders. Funny enough, I get mistaken for an Irishmen quite frequently. I asked other Canadians I run across here and everyone had that happen at least once. I guess our accents are funny.

Right...
South Africans cant be confused, same with NZ'ers, just ask them to say fish and chips.
Irish is a real stretch...
I don't pay much attention on whether the accent sounds funny or not. If I can understand clearly what the person is saying, then it's good enough especially if that person is trying to be friendly. Personally, I've never encountered a visiting Canadian (including the Frenchies) whose English is hard to understand.
@GTR12:I didn't know that I had to be signed up to gamespot forums to being playing online. I wish people would of told me, does everyone know this?
Read what YOU wrote; "YOU don't play enough online", you don't know me, you've been here 3 days and assume I don't play online.
Every time I play online, no-one mistakes my accent to a Brit.
lol some of us Canucks have funny accents, especially Newfies.
But most American accents sound more funny than Canadian accents to me.
@akirale: Just sounds like you have a stuffed up nose.
I was born in Minnesota. Have a ton of family still there. That accent is worse than a Canadian one. Only reason I really know Canadian accents at all is from all the hockey I watch. I always watch the home team stream from the NHL app. Good accent though. Much better than the southern twang of where I live now.
@akirale: I'm from Ontario, Canada. Currently living in Quebec, Canada.
Accents are not nation based, it's regional. I could go from Toronto, Ontario to Ottawa, Ontario and there is already a difference in accent. It's hard for anyone not from these areas because they obviously don't live here. Even to me who is from Ontario it is almost hard to tell but it's there.
Don't believe anything you see in a TV show or movie that mock Canadians. For the most part (although it's mainly satire), it's not very accurate. I pronounce "about", (a-bout), not (a-boot). There maybe some rural more up north parts with the stereotypical dialect but it's very rare.
If you go from let's say Albany, NY to Toronto, Ontario, you will more than likely not see a difference in accent. Maybe VERY LITTLE!
