Congress to consider giving more control of the Internet to UN.

Critics say plan would make it easier for other countries to silence dissidents

The U.S. government is trying to drum up support, both domestically and internationally, to preserve a decentralized Internet.

Go to ****ing hell, Congress. I'm so sick of them & this Government that keeps taking away our rights one by one. Either fire/abolish them along with the Republican/Democratic parties, etc.

Ugh. I'm just so mad right now...

Disagree with this. The role of the US government should be to preserve net neutrality and an open, uncensored Internet for the American people.

Hey OP, just wanted to let you know that the title of your thread is almost the exact opposite of the message that the article you linked to is trying to get across.

It says there is going to be an international debate on the subject in Dubai and the fear among most US officials is that countries like China and Russia are going to use increased UN control to silence political dissidents, and the White House has already gone on record that they want ot keep the Internet as open and free as possible.

Only two things will spark open agreement. Internet, and porn.

Edit: And maybe video games.

"The U.S. government is trying to drum up support, both domestically and internationally, to preserve a decentralized Internet"

Then goes on to say:

"The House panel said in a memo released on Tuesday that there is bipartisan agreement that the United States should stand firm in opposing any treaty provisions at the WCIT that would give the U.N. substantial control of the Internet."

So I'm curious as to where OP got his title. The UN is simply having a debate, and our official stance opposes central governship. Congress wants the opposite.

The Internet in its current state is a sewer and it needs supervision. That's because many people abuse the anonymity of the Internet to bully and harass others so someone obviously needs to keep an eye on on this system and prevent some of the abuses inherent on the Internet.

For example look at the English Wikipedia, the only free Enyclopedia on the Internet in the English language. The English Wikipedia currently has 4,101,913 articles but much of it is just false and repeating information intending to confuse the reader instead of giving them any true insight into the nature of things.

China, Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, .etc probably don't have enough economic leverage to make the E.U. and U.S. agree to increased internet regulation, and the U.N. doesn't have the power to enforce such a thing on Europe and North America anyway.

But it's not censorship. Some censorship can actually be good.

Many Internet message boards a full of hostile and abusive people. I know this because I was bullied and mistreated on Internet message boards many times before.

So someone obviously needs to keep the Internet bullies in check.

I disagree. The nanny state perception needs to be suppressed. One needs take the mental state to ignore, or move on when it comes to cyber bullying. Be self reliant when it comes to these things. The luxury of anonymity on the internet is what makes descent individuals become disgusting, and belligerent on the internet. It is the internet after all. But you shouldn't selectively censor things because someone is offended. Then we might as well erase 80% of OT
