A comet due to pass close to the Earth in 2013 is expected to provide a rare and spectacular display. The comet was only recently discovered by two Russian astronomers and has been named 'Ison' after the International Scientific Optical Network. What makes this particular comet so special is that it is due to pass very close to the Earth next year and is expected to be so bright in the sky that it will be visible with the naked eye and even brighter than the Moon. It will come in to range from the beginning of November 2013 until the first few weeks of 2014. Ison is believed to have originated in the Oort Cloud, an extensive region of icy rocks located in the outer solar system. On it's way to us the comet may also be visible from the Curiosity rover on Mars before making a pass of the Earth as close as 700,000 miles on November 28th. linky

700,000 mile perihelion .. holy crap. The rocks going to pass into the suns corona. Mercury orbits at 35 million miles. This rock is going to get VERY hot. If theres alot of built up ice inside this thing the whole brighter the moon" thing is possible. Well know better once it gets closer.

#18 Posted by Storm_Marine (10767 posts) -

How long will it be visible for?

#19 Posted by Motokid6 (5239 posts) -

If theres alot of frozen material in this thing a long time after it passes by the sun and makes its way back to the outter solar system.

Now that will be cool.

I remember laying outside all night with my girl looking at Comet Hyakutake. The tail on that thing was spectacular, all told is stretched across most of the sky.

It's been about 20 years though, so I'd love another go. Different comet, different girl.:D

I've never seen the show (I don't watch TV at all) but I'm pretty sure those ponies are suppose to be tweens.

And clopper or not, anyone wearing a sweater and no pants to stargaze definately has some unresolved issues.:P
